Who's up for The Who?

Post by Lord Mhoram »

This band was pretty nasty. Some favorite songs: Happy Jack, I Can't Explain (totally illustrates adolescent alienation and the inability to communicate!), My Generation, Bargain, Boris the Spider, Long Live Rock, Sister Disco, Pinball Wizardand my favorite: Behind Blue Eyes.

I only have Who's Next, but I hope to remedy that with Quadrophenia very soon. I love all their songs. In fact less than an hour ago I was blasting them on the stereo, headbanging and dancing myself silly and alternately hoping the neighbors didn't hear. My favorite song by them is Baba O'Riley.

Don't forget: Substitute, The Kids Are Alright, A Quick One While He's Away (the Live at Leeds version), I'm a Boy, I Can See for Miles and their version of Summertime Blues. :)

I love Substitute and the Kids Are Alright. And I Can See for Miles. And I almost forgot my favorite Tommy tune: Sally Simpson.

I think you are all crackers, although my mum lives next door to Pete Townshend!
The reality is in this head. Mine. I'm the projector at the planetarium, all the closed little universe visible in the circle of that stage is coming out of my mouth, eyes, and sometimes other orifices also.

Eh, Mhoram, I went through a Who phase in my freshman year at college. If you get a chance watch the documentary The Kids Are Allright, has some great concert footage in it. 8)

Rumour has it that The Who (the two remaining members) are in the works for cutting another album.
(WHO2 is the name given so far.)
Maybe a tour also will follow.

How 'bout "The Real Me". If there's an angrier song ever recorded, I don't know it.

One of my all-time favorite bands, and I love every song that has been mentioned on this old thread. I think Who's Next and Quadrophenia are their best albums, but I've liked some songs from every one they've released (yes, even from the ones without Keith Moon).

Love the bass playing on Who songs in general, but ESPECIALLY on that song!

Now and then I get the itch to hear this song, and it usually gets me to smile, at least a little, on every hearing. :)

SLIP KID
(Written by Pete Townshend)

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight ...

I've got my clipboard, text books
Lead me to the station
Yeah, I'm off to the civil war
I've got my kit bag, my heavy boots
I'm runnin' in the rain
Gonna run till my feet are raw

Slip kid, slip kid, second generation
And I'm a soldier at thirteen
Slip kid, slip kid, realization
There's no easy way to be free
No easy way to be free

It's a hard, hard world

I left my doctor's prescription bungalow behind me
I left the door ajar
I left my vacuum flask
Full of hot tea and sugar
Left the keys right in my car

Slip kid, slip kid, second generation
Only half way up the tree
Slip kid, slip kid, I'm a relation
I'm a soldier at sixty-three
No easy way to be free

Slip kid, slip kid

Keep away old man, you won't fool me
You and your history won't rule me
You might have been a fighter, but admit you failed
I'm not affected by your blackmail
You won't blackmail me

I've got my clipboard, text books
Lead me to the station
Yeah, I'm off to the civil war
I've got my kit bag, my heavy boots
I'm runnin' in the rain
Gonna run till my feet are raw

Slip kid, slip kid, slip out of trouble
Slip over here and set me free
Slip kid, slip kid, second generation
You're slidin' down the hill like me
No easy way to be free
No easy way to be free
No easy way to be free

I've found that I can even get people who aren't fans of The Who to appreciate this song, I think due to its self-deprecating humor.

BORIS THE SPIDER
(Written by John Entwistle)

Look, he's crawling up my wall
Black and hairy, very small
Now he's up above my head
Hanging by a little thread

Boris the spider
Boris the spider

Now he's dropped on to the floor
Heading for the bedroom door
Maybe he's as scared as me
Where's he gone now, I can't see

Boris the spider
Boris the spider

Creepy, crawly
Creepy, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly

There he is wrapped in a ball
Doesn't seem to move at all
Perhaps he's dead, I'll just make sure
Pick this book up off the floor

Boris the spider
Boris the spider

Creepy, crawly
Creepy, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly

He's come to a sticky end
Don't think he will ever mend
Never more will he crawl 'round
He's embedded in the ground

Boris the spider
Boris the spider
