New game, guessing books from their final lines.

Where's this one from?
Foster said, "Skip the formalities, please. I've left you a load of work and you don't have all eternity to fiddle with it. Certainly 'Thou art God' - but who isn't?"
He left, and Mike pushed back his halo and got to work. He could see a lot of changes he wanted to make-

sounds familiar, but i can't place it. i'd like to say Good Omens, but i doubt it.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Good Omens rocks like Santa in a bikini - but no, these lines are from another, much older book.

Here we go!
A ship that size couldn't stop or turn around in less than a mile or so, and the lifeboats would need additional time to locate me at dusk in a rough sea. Yet I knew they would find me if I managed to keep afloat. A wave swept over me, but I shook the white belt of hair out of my eyes and started swimming strongly. Until the body melts and the brain ceases to gel, a man who has come out whole after having been put through his paces by the Delian has a heart for living.
I think it's a tough one, but at least one of you can get it. :) heh heh

Well I was going 2 guess either Robinson Crusoe as a joke, but will try w/ The Island of Dr. Moreau by H. G. as that seems a little more plausible--I get the feeling I am totally off base and haven't a clue in the world. And u kno what? It feels GRRRRRRRR-ATE!! :lion: (we don't need no stinkin' tigers...)

Sorry danlo. :)
Here's a clue: Copyright is 1949. I have reason to suspect that only one of you regular posters knows the answer, and I'm sort of waiting for him/her to visit this thread. :)
And I guess that admission might be another clue.

This is a tough thread, and I expect we'll stump each other quite often if we don't do things like, "History will view us as wives" or however exactly that quote goes. I mean, has anybody else read The Kundalini Equation? There's just too many books that we all just happen to stumble on. Anyway, if nobody gets it, I'll give another clue by the time I go to sleep in 13-ish hours, then the answer tomorrow.

Another hint: In this book, you will meet Orpheus, Robin Hood, Gawain, and a whole bunch of other characters from myth and legend.

Let's set some rules ... the book should be fantasy/SF, at least moderately popular, not an anthology or other kind of collection, published in English of course ...

Like I said, this is a tough thread. So the answer is Silverlock, by John Myers Myers. My sort of weird clue was because fightingmyinstincts made a thread a few days ago about the book, and I was the only one to respond to it. So I figured that was one person who would know, and the rest of you might have stumbled across that, and remembered it here. :D

So who should go next? I'd say danlo, who made the most guesses.

Oh! Oh! I was going to guess Silverlock (though only after those clues!)!!!!

Can I play?
Then Richard nodded, without trusting himself to speak, and stood up. And they walked away together through the hole in the wall, back into the darkness, leaving nothing behind them; not even the doorway.
Any guesses?

I know! :) Fine book, don't know the TV version. But I'll let someone else answer, since I just had my turn. ;)
