Journey

Post by Chrysalis »

Any Journey fans out there? Either way I am curious to hear people thoughts on the new singer that has been appointed.

Arnel Pineda has replaced Jeff Scott Soto and came top in the auditions to be the new lead singer. He was first seen on youtube by the bands guitarist and things progressed from there.

There have been mixed opinions about this choice:

*is it good to bring a non-american into the group
*will he be able to last a tour, stamina wise
*will this change the band in ways unwanted
etc
Personally I think Pineda fits the bill quite well for the new lead. Considering the fact he has over 25 years experience as a singer/songwriter in his own right, plus he has the ability to perform 6 nights a week wth 4- 5 hour sets so I'm sure he can hold his own.

Here are two clips to compare.

First, I love Journey, always have, always will.

This guy though, Pineda - at first I had a hard time listening to his voice over the bad keyboardist, but he can sing, but his strong accent will hurt him.

No one will EVER replace Steve Perry.

Soto is one helluva singer. He did some of the singing for the fictional Steel Dragon in the movie Rock Star. I saw Journey open for Def Leppard about 18 months ago, and I was impressed with the show they put on.

The guitarist in my band (Nathan Boone) played in a band with Soto, and really wasn't impressed with him. He likes Pineda better. I'm not certain that he critisizes Soto's singing, or his personality, though. I just know Nathan hates him. Nathan loves Journey; I thought they were okay until Jonathan Cain joined; after that, they sucked out loud.

Tam loves Journey, I don't, but have always been impressed with Schoen (sp) and Rollie's musicianship all the way back to when they were with Santana.

I like the old stuff. A few years back, I saw a special on VH1, or something, where they replaced Perry. I was floored by how much the guy sounded like him. Was this Soto?

I think I saw the same VH1 show you did. I also remember being amazed by how much the new singer sounded like Perry. I don't think this was Soto, though. I thought I remembered the (then) new guy's first name being Steve as well.

Arnel Pineda sounds a hell of a lot like Steve Perry.

Tomorrow Hyperception and I are off to the Heart/Journey/Cheap Trick show in Tampa. We'll leave Gator Town about noon, to avoid rush hour traffic. So we'll probably be in Tampa around two-ish...

Are any of the Tampa contingent of Watchers going to this show? IIRC Chevil hinted he might go a few weeks ago.

Not able to go. :(
However, I have seen all three groups before so no big loss for me.
In fact, Heart and Cheap Trick played on the same bill previously, with Blue Oyster Cult, U.F.O., and Firefall at Tampa Stadium back in the mid-80's. GREAT show that was!)

It was a terrific show.
Long drive home (just walked in at 2:00 am).
But totally worth it...

I probably should have went to that show, but I wasn't sure I was getting paid for a job I did last month and rent was due today, so I didn't go. Naturally, the guy paid me yesterday.....

Anyway, I heard a bit of Arnel Pineda's life on a local radio station, and looked him up on wiki to get more details; it's very interesting:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arnel_Pineda

Then I looked up Steve Perry to figure out why he left Journey, and that too is an interesting read. It even mentions the 'other Steve' Mortice referenced in his post.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Perry_%28musician%29

Like I said before, I preferred Journey before Cain joined and turned them into a pop band, but really, they're still a very good band.

My daughters love Journey and we stream the Pandora station a lot when we're driving. I'm amazed at how great the album "Escape" was, with the exception of "Open Arms," which I'm quite sure is blaring from the speakers in Hell, and probably cranked to 11 at that.

"Frontiers" is also a great album, especially side A (I remember having this on vinyl, some 30 years ago.) "Separate Ways" rocks out.

Escape is good. I think I like Infinity best, Departure next, and then Evolution.

People and Places is a very cool song.

I like the Journey albums with Gregg Rolie on keyboards/vocals the best. The first three albums (Journey, Look Into The Future, and Next) are very enjoyable progressive rock adventures for me. The next three albums, after Steve Perry joined (Infinity, Evolution, and Departure), were also good because I think they retained a lush musical atmosphere even while working at sounding more commercial. But I'm with dANdeLION, in that Jonathan Cain joining the band as Rolie's replacement made the band less interesting. I saw this band on the Escape tour in September 1981 (my first rock concert), but I was there to hear the old stuff.

Here's an early Journey tune that's a favorite of mine, from the album Next.

Feeling That Way/Anytime

perfect rock song, perfect use of the two singers, Gregg Rollie and Steve Perry. Neal Schon is a beast here.

and purely cosmetic, but Schon's afro is glorious.

STAY AWHILE
(Written by Steve Perry, Neil Schon)

I'd do anything to hold you.
I'd go anywhere to touch you.
I'd do anything you want me to,
If you'll just stay with me awhile.

I'd sing any song your heart desires.
I would sing out loud of love's sweet fires.
Oh, I'd do all this and so much more.
If you'll just stay with me awhile.

Reach out your hand,
Oh, to me.
Oh, I'm fallin'
One minute more,
I'm fallin'
I'm fallin'
Oh, oh, fallin', fallin', fallin', fallin'
Won't you just stay with me awhile?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Ad539hRwok

Nice and smooth; I like it.
