Agree it was long .. and there were parts of the film that seemed meaningless and unnecessary .. but there are parts of the earlier movies that had similar components..

I like MsMarys comment that its not so much about breaking from the past as much as it is about moving forward.

I liked it but it didn't seem like a Star Wars movie to me.
It was a little off some how.
It felt small not a epic movie.

What made it more apparent to me was that I watched Rouge One a few days later and immediately thought: This is a Star Wars movie!

Maybe I just expected more from TLJ?
Plus Luke's character was just such a disappointment for me.
Almost ruined the whole thing.

And I'm not a nitpicker.
I had a moments pause when I thought "wtf? Bombs falling down in space?" but I let it go. lol
(and yes, I've read online the ridiculous "everything has gravity" apologies)
I don't like the Finn character I think. He's still running around like a dummy. The casino scene was dumb. Why so many humans too?

You've seen the dumb "ships have gravity" thing, but not the pictures of the companion book where it says the bombs are magnetically propelled?

Anyway, it's Star Wars! Spaceships don't move like aeroplanes or boats, but you probably don't complain about that.

Rey and Ren were able to communicate in real time despite being lightyears apart: what's up with that?

Chewbacca lets yummy Porgi onto his ship and into the command pod: what's up with that?

Luke's only source of hydration for years is an alien udder beast: what's up with that?

And most importantly,

Someone thought a fleet of fighter craft that can't fly straight without dragging a big stick on the ground to stabilize them was a reasonable idea: what's up with that?

Plus hahaha .. he did eat the porgs yummy mom .. and hes probably mellowed with age, I think he kinda liked the little guys, despite them annoying him ..

Luke has always been a disappointment... he struggled with Master Yodas training, and even Yoda said there is another, Leia. The force was much stronger with her and she didnt even have training. Rey is another natural like Leia, the force is strong with her.

And yeah why not a weird vehicle that requires an earthing cable or pinion. God there are Pod racers, tsmeu 6 wheel bikes, star fighters,
cloud cars, B wing ships, Y wing fighters, AT ST and AT AT walkers .. etc.

I just got around to seeing this last night. It was a good movie. I was a bit disappointed in parts of it. As others have said, I would have liked to have seen Luke go out in an actual battle rather than a telepathic one. I did like the idea that the force was that strong and a unique way of using it. But Luke has been training all this time, I was hoping for a cool Jedi fight from him.

Outside of that, the same things. Leia surviving space while unconscious and the fighters falling into the Dreadnought. I actually helped myself with that one and figured it was not falling into the Dreadnought but rather caught in the gravity of the planet below them.

Overall I liked it. I didnt love it.

Yeah a lot of people have not liked the Luke fight scene .. but to me it was a fight scene .. and as he WAS meeting a much greater armed front

I kinda thought the holograminess levelled the playing field .. noting that Luke is strong, but not invincible So that scene worked better for me. And it was him fighting and deflecting attacks .. but remotely

I thought that part was rather clever

Considering that this series is a feminist take on SW, even Chewie is gettin' in touch with his feels. That's how I read it, at least.

TLJ was just spectacular, IMO. It made me retrospectively appreciate TFA sooo much more. TFA originally seemed like an enjoyable, though bleary and occasionally forced, retro-tribute. Now, it seems like a precise and deliberate setup, wrapped deceptively in a fanserv retread confectionary-coating.

I didn't think that this'd be a particularly controversial assertion (though, granted, I've not read over much this thread). This is Leia's story (Obi-Wan: "That boy is our last hope." Yoda: "No, there is another."), and so it seems to have appropriate resonances.

Just a few off the top of my head:

• VAdm. Holdo's critique of the "impulsive" and "dangerous" "flyboy" Poe being "the last thing we need right now" (even though it was exactly what was needed within the androcentricity of Luke's story).
• The reversal from the Luke-cycle's "fighting in order to save" ("fighting what we hate") to that of "saving in order to fight" (a "saving what we love"), through a focusing upon the nurturing, preservative and recuperative flight from the First Order rather than upon confrontation.
• The "Sisterhood" touchy-feely moment twixt Leia and Holdo.
• The Casino-city scene being a postcolonial critique of Western capitalist excess and subjugation of nature. (True, this is not a uniquely feminist critique, but it is certainly is a concern dominant in Western schools.)

I'm sure there's a lot more. There's all that's involved (and still to be revealed) with Rey's arc, Rose saving Finn from the "suicidal" consequences of his "macho" heroic antics, etc.

Well yes that makes perfect sense as that line would never have made sense if we had not had Leias story. Nice one.

Oh my fucking god .. so sisterhood is two women connecting in discourse .. and is by very definition "touchy feely" and somehow that is an indication of feminism? You guys are you fear of the "feels". Weirdos

yes not everything scene has women in it, and definitely not representative of the sin of excesses, lusts and sexual domination aligns even remotely with a feminist perspective. It would rather be an opposite narrative, with powerful women, doing as equally as their male counterparts.

I'm sure there's a lot more. There's all that's involved (and still to be revealed) with Rey's arc, Rose saving Finn from the "suicidal" consequences of his "macho" heroic antics, etc.

Ok Ill pay that last one. A feminist narrative would elevate the female characters to that of their male counterparts. So yeah Rey is a strong female character. As is Leia and Holdo. So sure .. but not sure that was its scripting intention to factor a feminist perspective into the plot. But ok .. some of it I can see.

There's many streams of Feminism, with "I am woman, hear me roar" being only one iteration. The modernist streams, both Left and Right, can differ significantly from the more poststructuralist, Alt-Left streams. I'm sure there are Alt-Right streams as well, though I'm not very familiar with them.
