"The Eyre Affair"

Post by aliantha »

I'm now reading a pretty good book that I ran across at the library -- "The Eyre Affair" by Jasper Fforde. It's a sci-fi mystery (think Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency) with outrageous puns (the main character's name is Thursday Next) that also includes numerous references to Great Literature, so it hasn't been relegated to the genre section. The "Eyre" in the title is Jane Eyre, Edward Rochester (Jane's employer, for the guys who haven't read Bronte) makes several appearances, and one branch of the plot has to do with the theft of the original manuscript of Martin Chuzzlewit. The book is set in 1985, when the Crimean War is still going on -- so you can tell upfront that it's set in an alternate universe.

Anyhow, as Jane Eyre was my favorite book for awhile in my teen years, I'm having fun reading this.

It was good. A lot of the names were puns (the main character is Thursday Next) and there was other funny stuff throughout. Nothing to take seriously, but pleasant. I think it's coming out in paperback soon.
