Tom Cruise

Post by duchess of malfi »

OK, I'll admit it. For whatever reason this guy and the majority of his movies just don't do anything for me.  My girlfriends all think I am nuts. :(

Can someone please explain to me what I am apparently missing? 8)

I don't get it either. <img src=kevinswatch.ihugny.com/phpBB2/album_see.php?id=111>

But I'm hoping to see The Last Samurai very soon, now that it's on dvd. Lots of people say it's really good, even some who feel the same about Tom as I do.

Cruise movies I will watch for pleasure:

Eyes Wide Shut
Jerry Maguire
Interview with the Vampire
Born on the Fourth of July

Haven't seen Magnolia yet, but I'll probably like it. Note: just because I like watching a movie doesn't mean I think it's good. For instance, if I have nothing to do and it's on, I will watch Battlefield Earth. :screwy: Think on that, and be dismayed.

A Brad poll? Now he is truly drool-worthy, especially in Legends of the Fall.

The Last Samurai was excellent. Too bad it came out at the same Time as Return of the King. I the Last Samurai was a batter movie. Did it come out this week? I need to make a trip to Wal-mart.

I saw Magnolia when it came out, and I barely kept myself from walking out on it. I think it's a self-indulgent, sanctimonious movie. A stinker. (We need a turkey emoticon for movies.) I had no problems with Tom Cruise himself: I thought he was one of the few bright spots in the film.

Films featuring Tom Cruise that I like:

Eyes Wide Shut
Minority Report
Far And Away
The Firm

It's inevitable, but I think of Cruise as movie star first, and actor a distant second. It's been argued that he basically plays the same role in all of his movies: that of Tom Cruise.

On the other hand, I think of someone like Russell Crowe as both great leading man and great character actor.

I agree on the Cruise-as-Cruise point. Tom Cruise, like Bruce Willis (and no doubt others who elude me for the moment) seems to always play the same character, in different lives. However, I tend to be of the opinion that both are surprisingly good actors when they are given the chance (and the inclination).

As for drool-factor - no comment

Ah. Well, I rented it today and watched it when I got home. Can't say I agree at all. It was ambitious and lengthy, to be sure, but I find that it ultimately succeeded, due to the interesting stories and excellent ensemble performances.

Hey hey! Someone else agrees with me! I loved Magnolia! ;) And Matrixman, even though we disagree, it's nice to finally see someone who has a real reason for not liking this movie. Everybody else I've talked to who didn't like it, claimed it was because "It was too long" "It was slow and boring...." Half of them didn't even finish it! But someone who watched the whole thing and came away feeling more that it was self-aggrandizing rather than just too long.....now that I can respect! 8)

*bows to Lord Foul and birdandbear*

I knew my view was likely in the extreme minority. I'm aware that Magnolia is highly regarded by many. For example, on the Internet Movie Database, I notice that Magnolia is ranked among the top 250 films ever (#174), as voted by users.

Perhaps all I can say in my defense is that every film has its dissenters, even the mighty Citizen Kane. I stand by my assessment of Magnolia, though I accept the possibility that I'm a schmuck who simply doesn't "get" the movie.

Ok, all you Cruise-lovers out there. Dont kill me now... I have a very special relationship to this actor: I dislike him and I have done since I was about 10 years old and everybody else my age adored him. It might have been a counter reaction, but if it was, it has certainly lingered.

At the age of 15 me and some of my fellow anti-cruise-lovers wrote a "lovely" poem (I will write it in swedish so that you might get the rhymes at least, and then there is a hideous translation below):

Tompa är en äcklig snubbe,
dunka hans huvud mot en stubbe.
Blodet sprutar, sprätter, far
- snart finns inte Tompa kvar!

("Tommy is a horrible guy,
smash his head on a tree-stump.
The blood sprays, splutters, flyes
- soon there will be no Tommy left!)

Gosh, we must have been rather blood thirsty at that time. I am not sure I would be able to recite it to his face if I met him today (not very likely either, that I should meet him at all I mean), but I am afraid I would have, if I had been given a chance when I was 15...

(actually we later on replaced "Tommy" with "Åke" - the swedish translator of Lord of the Rings and turned it into a even bloodier ballad. I can only remember one verse and then he was rather malested allready:

Åke krälar mot hem och härd,
en yxa sätter stopp för hans fortsatta färd.

Åke crawls toward his home,
an axe puts and end to this journey.)

8O I must have been a horrible kid. And imagine that this was even before all the violece on TV!

I wouldn't watch a movie just because he's in it, but he's been in some good movies. Some of his movies that I personally like:

A Few Good Men
Risky Business
Minority Report
Top Gun

Haven't seen Last Samurai yet, but I still get a laugh out of his cameo appearance in Austin Powers: Goldmember, though.

If you're going to hate somebody, don't waste you're energies on Cruise. There's much juicier opportunities out there: Bob Sagget, Tony Danza, Steven Guttenberg, and Jeff Goldblum, to name a few. And, yes, they're really all the same person.

He was good in the character of Lestat, Interview With The Vampire.
