Stuff to look out for.

A few good candidates to keep your eyes peeled for in the coming weeks.

Actually already showing, Jordan Perl's follow up to Get out called 'Us' is another horror thriller about a family who, while on vacation, become the targets of a mirror image family of doppelgangers seemingly bent their destruction. Rumoured to be even better than the academy award nominated Get Out, this film is going to be a must for any fans of the genre, which is currently undergoing a bit of a golden period.

Next, have a look at the trailer for Brightburn which plays on the idea of taking the superman story and putting it on it's head by making the extraterrestrial a baddy instead of the saviour of the world. Directed by Ridley Scott, it's done pretty seriously rather than ala comic book and in one trailer I saw looks to be very interesting. Warning though, the other trailer I saw fall a bit flat so try to find the good one.

A new film starring William Defoe as Van Gogh called The Edge of Eternity has promise for those interested in getting inside the head of one of the greats of the art world and White Crow, the story of Rudolph Nureyev's defection to the west is an arthouse thriller that is making some waves, not least because the star is a genuine ballet dancer who performs all of his own dance routines.

I'm always on the lookout for new time of interest that might slip under the radar so if you spot anything..........

The Man Who Killed Don Quixote is a movie Terry Gilliam has been trying to make for a while now, and keeps having trouble getting it made and out. The latest bit in it all is Amazon backed out of distribution, so it is only going to be showing one day in theaters as part of Fathom events. April 10th is the day. I've got my ticket, and really hope it was worth all the labors. Honestly, I haven't been thrilled with his output lately, which makes me sad as a few of his films are my all time favorites. I sincerely hope he gets his mojo back, particularly as this is something he has been working on for a while from back when I still was enjoying his movies. Regardless, he does make movies nobody else makes, so that is a compelling enough reason in and of itself.

Ok Petegot a dynamite movie for you .. just watched it tonight KluKKKlansman freaking awesome.. and 100 percent stressful .. pretty confronting .. brilliant summation.

Didn't I see a documentary a few years ago Cag on the abortive attempt to shoot Don Quixote that Gilliam made, when everything - absolutely everything - that could go wrong - did! On this basis alone, plus my love of Gilliam films when they go right, I've got to catch this movie!

Now that sounds interesting Sky! I've seen BlacKkKlansman - I wonder if this is the same film. I'll go check it out........

I'm back Sky. I can't find any reference to the film you mention - wonder if BlacKkKlansman was released under a different name in Oz? If it is this film you mean - yes - I loved it. Great story based on truth that so sets out how things should be rather than how they so often are! Simply loved it - with a sobering, sobering ending indeed.

New one to keep a watch for is the deep physics based murder thriller Out of Blue. The reviewer I saw (Mark Kermode) so loved it he'd seen it three times and said that every time it just revealed deeper layers of meaning and connection that you hadn't gotten before. We in a physics research establishment where a scientist has been murdered, as the story progresses it moves ever from the workaday world into the paradoxes of quantum physics where the investigating detective finds her understanding of the world she inhabits slowly crumbling around her. Sounds great to me; my kind of movie!

Yes it was brilliant.. Adam Driver was brilliant I thought playing a Jewish non Jew ... and soooo stressful.

I think that was the cause of the stress .. I found it terribly stressful to watch lol Using his real name, applying for KKK membership from his ACTUAL address ... oh soooo many scary freaking real identity conflicts.

I have no idea how people can do that stuff. Infiltrating biker gangs and the mob etc, where the tinyest slip and you're dead. The sustained pressure for months and months you'd have to endure. That would kill you. It would have to!

So I saw The Man Who Killed Don Quixote last week, and I guess I haven't been back since. It was better than I thought it would be, but I was setting my sights pretty low. And it was still a mess, which sucks, but the thing that really stood out is how beautiful the visuals were. If there weren't such funny moments, I'd watch this whole movie again with the sound off.
The leads, Adam Driver and Jonathan Pryce, were fantastic. The whole cast was great, in fact. There was a strong feeling of other movies from Gilliam, particularly Fisher King. We'll see how I feel about it further on, but I think this is the first Gilliam movie for a while that I'm looking forward to watching again.

Loved The Fisher King, got to be my favourite film the director has done to date and amongst my all time favourites! Bodes well for this movie - but your post makes sure I'm not asking for too much from this film, such that it cannot but disapoint Cag. Nice one!
