Strange Solicitation...Any Ideas??

Post by Brinn »

I received the following in my e-mail today. Anyone know if this is a scam or has anyone else received something similar???: :?

____________________________________________________________
Your respect of Donaldson's "2nd Chronicles of Thomas Covenant" series is
noble. Finding you on the Guestbook of the Land, I feel connected with
other readers of his brilliant work. I have just completed The Wounded
Land, as an adult now. Purchased as a child after reading the 1st
Chronicles, I never dove in and read it until now. The comprehension,
appreciation, and enjoyment are far deeper now than they could have been had
I read it when purchased decades ago. I am now hooked and must have the
final 2 books in the series.

I have donated my other books to school libraries as I often do after
completing a series. What I seek from you is to obtain the final 2 books
(softback ok)- The One Tree and White Gold Wielder. Surely you or someone
you're connected with has an unneeded or extra set. A horrid divorce,
hospital incidents, and financial crash have left me as the beggar- creator
of worlds in my mind but pauper in person; like a pre-Covenant-the-author in
that I wish to write novels but have not constructed the entire new worlds
in my mind yet. What keeps me going is my passion for a better world, and
the metaphorical expression via fantasy books to help awaken minds to build
that world. The Wounded Land spoke to me between lines and pages.
Recalling the 1st Chronicles from my childhood and relating very closely
with Covenant's trials in The Wounded Land, I sense my rebirth being
chiseled from the 2nd Chronicles. Though my logical mind recognizes it to
be metaphorical, my passionate heart is drawn to the Land. And without
passion, all the intelligence in the world achieves nothing.

It is therefore crucial for me to complete the 2nd Chronicles. And after
completion, I can either return the books to you or, preferably, donate them
to the local school library for children of creative mind to enjoy.

It would touch my heart deeply if you could lend or donate your 2nd
Chronicles to me. I don't even have a credit card or I would buy them used
online, and I don't even have $10 to my name right now, literally, to even
send to a publisher. In getting back on my feet, which may be a long
arduous process, I have found that simply the knowledge of needing to do so
does not drive me. I need the fuel of metaphor; the fuel of passion and
love for a believed ability to heal and improve this world; the fuel for the
small flame which already burns inside thanks to Thomas Covenant; a mentally
constructed talisman; the white gold.

I am of sound mind. The world of fantasy is not an escape. It is fuel. A
fuel which has ignited a fire inside. That fire is real to me, and I know I
must feed it. I must complete the Chronicles. My gratitude to you, my
fellow Covenant fan, shall run deep. For my reawakening and rebirth has
only just begun, and the projects which I will complete in the future will
owe part of their existence to your assistance. Thus I will remember and
repay your generosity.

Will you aid my quest?

Awaiting your reply,
John Truthbringer

Nope. Kind of strange. I can spare a copy of The One Tree, though (WGW is signed by the man himself and is not getting out of my sight).
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Clever appeal...

No $10 but can get online. Can't buy them online, what about visiting a real store?
I am of sound mind.
Most obviously. Those who fall for this might not be.

hey ... visit the library .. is a great idea ..

I dont have spare copies of any of the series .. but I bought my entire set second hand .. for AUD $2-4.00 per copy .. real cheap here maybe .. in US dollars thats only about .80 cents to $1.00 - a couple of bucks per copy .. but you gotta take pot luck .. you can only get whats available ..

I feel for this guy/gal .. it must be tough in the States .. if you have huge medical expenses and are flat broke ..

I wouldnt take a hard-line with such a person .. I feel for this guy .. maybe if they wrote to SRD himself .. [surely a stamp is within an affordable range] .. an emotive plea of this callibre may produce the desired result

If he/she is really desperate to read TCTC .. and I cant blame anyone for feeling that strongly about TCTC .. then a visit to the library is definitely the way to go!!

When waiting to get hold of a TCTC book myself .. the library worked for me  ...

good luck Truthbringer!! If I had a spare copy no problem .. I do have a spare LFB [fairly rough one but] .. I'll be happy to send that .. but no luck on the 2nd series - no spares there .. I hope you gets to finish the series!!

I have done a few searches, but it does not look like a standard scam in any case.

But I do not know, I habitually distrust things like this.

Did this come from #12345@prison.gov? I would just ignore it. He can go to the library and if his library doesn't have it they can order it through interlibrary loan.

I'm tempted to respond with some of the suggestions here but the whole thing is somwhat disconcerting. If this is a scam, what is this guy going to do with a pile of TOT and WGG books?!?!?

BTW can't one access the internet through a library? Does that mean e-mail access as well?

Earthblood...did you recieve this recently and did you respond?

Sounds kind of like the scam where the person offers you a cut of the $20,000,000 he can't get at because he got kicked out of some country or the other. All you have to do is send him some money.

An interesting variation though. I suppose he wants TCTC now, cash later.

Okay, nicest scenario:

He's kinda dim. I mean, you can get online at a library easily enough and it wouldn't be hard to find the books there.

Email him back with that notation. Wish him luck. That's my advice.

Frankly, this doesn't sound like so much a scam as a lonely, neurotic person reaching out in a (very) akward way.

weird sad bastard, people like this freak me out,

if he's genuine, I feel guilty, but what a weird thing to come up with

probably a serial killer, just wait, they'll be finding bodies with quotes from the chronicles scrawled nearby.

Reply to him at your peril

Oh, that's cheerful. 8O Thanks, Hamako....

The whole thing just sounds odd. Methinks this guy is a scam artist who's trolling for real names and addresses, for whatever nefarious reason. Brinn, if you choose to reply at all, I'd tell him sorry, no spare copies of TCTC to send him, but he can borrow them from the library for free.

I didn't get this e-mail, BTW, but then I haven't been to The Land's site in awhile, either.
