Sounds interesting...I don't think SRD would mind your making this as long as you don't claim the world or characters as your own and you don't make money off of it. He did mention in the gradual interview on his main site that as long as those two criteria were met, he didn't mind fan FICTION, but I think we can apply that to games, too. I don't play NWN personally, but I think I could steal a copy from a friend in order to play this mod when it's done. I really would like to see this finished!

Great, caamora!

It's good to hear you're running HOTU(I haven't even started it yet. Been too busy working on this game) and that's one thing I forgot to mention. For this module to run on NWN, you need to have the base game installed plus both expanasions. I use scripting and items from all the expansions.

What's nice is BIOWare now sells the basic and Shadows of Unrentide as one game called Neverwinter Nights Gold Edition. It sells for about 40 bux. Here's the link:
nwn.bioware.com/about/goldedition.html

You would nieed that and the Hordes of the Underdark to run my mod.
Hordes info:

nwn.bioware.com/underdark/

caamora, I can zip up the hakpak and mod and send it to you. Just let me know, what is the best way to reach you? AIM, yahoo, email?

The hakpak is huge, like 160 meg, so if you have dial-up only, we may want to start this and let it go overnight. Let me know how and when to reach you. And thanks for willing to be one of my alpha testers!

Im new to the forum here having just found it but I've read the 1st and 2nd chronicles three times now and already have neverwinter nights and both expansions installed. I have a broadband connection so email me and we can set up a way to transfer the hakpak if you still need testers.

update to game

Post by Caerroil Wildfish »

Wow, A lot is happening in Mithil Stonedown right now! Atiaran's pissed, Trell wants to caamora my character, and Triock is going nuclear with his knife.

I have been spending a lot of time creating dialog and cutscenes with the Stonedowners to get the plot line going toward the ultimate goal for part one of this mod.

I think if you're story and plot-orientated about your games, like most good RPG's are, you should enjoy this mod. Thanks to Thermo-Pile and caamora for their willingness to test out my mod. I will have a downloadable zip byt this weekend! I hope more of you out there will be willing to try it out!

I'm finishing the Mithil Stonedown portion and should be ready to move on next week.

What I see on the near horizon of the Southern Plains:

What's up with Atiaran? She has the jitters about this Waymeet we're going into!

Who's that big dude in that boat down by the river?

Has there been any more progress related to this?

I would buy the two expansions and re-install NWN just to play this mod..

Covenant recognized that this was a fact. But he had not expected such an argument from the Giant.

update

Post by Caerroil Wildfish »

You betcha!

I've been working furiously to finish the Mithil Stonedown area so that the first testers will have a decent amount of adventure to explore. I project, if all goes well, to have a downloadable zip by Saturday or Sunday (15th or 16th).

Keep in mind, some of the mod will be rough draft and I will continually polish the content and add more after releasing my "demo" version this weekend.

What I will need from the testers:

1. Try to break it! Do weird and unexpected stuff to try to get yourself stuck in the mod. I need the feedback to make revisions. Make sure to give me detailed reports on exactly what you did to create the glitch.

2. Suggestions! How can I make it better? What needs to be changed, added, modified?

3. Character. Did I do at least a passing job of keeping the "feel" of the characters and plot like the book?

THANKS!

playable demo (I hope)

Post by Caerroil Wildfish »

Ok, beta testers, I have a playable demo of my module uploaded to my website.

It's still pretty rough but it does have the essentials to show off the plot and characters.

This mod is NOT finished yet. The mod will end abruptly at Mithil Stonedown, but I feel I have enough for people to test this out and give me feedback.

Here is the web link to download the file (just unzip the file and follow the readme directions):

Thanks!

"I've been approached many times about RPGs. When the gamers want to use my creations for their own private amusement, I give them an automatic Yes. When the gamers want to design a product which they could actually sell, I'm forced to refer them to my publishers"

This is a quote from SRD's web site.

I really wonder if I'm riding the fence on this adventure module I'm making.

Is my creation for my private amusment? Yes, but I also want other people to FREELY, and I mean FREELY, enjoy the work as well. I don't even want to hint at the fact that I profit in any monetary means from this module I'm creating.

This module is not even an attempt to re-do the Chronicles at they were written by Mr. Donaldson. I'm not pretentious or stupid enough to even think I could capture the depth and internal essence of his work in a computer game. What I wanted to do was use the characters, setting, and plot line as a basis for the game so that you, the brave new hero (not Covenant) could explore the Land and have a little fun.

Now, when the company makers of NeverWinter Nights profit from the sale of NeverWInter Nights because a consumer wants to buy it to play my module, is that infringement?

God, I hope not! If it is, I will shut down the project and get rid of the files immediately.

I have nothing but admiration and respect for Mr. Donaldson and his work. I'm just a kid in a candy store when I can create a computer adventure that uses elements of his great work and have other people freely enjoy it.

Please, I need some opinions here, especially legal ones!

Thank You!

I'm not a legal expert by any means, so you have my apology but it seems to be this scenario is a bit stretched. You are not selling your module. It seems to me that is the crux of the law. It is open to the public like many other NWN modules out there (and some using copyrighted material as well from various fantasy sources.)

Here is an example: Dragonlance (authors Margret Weis and Tracy Hickman) novels and their mythos. Not only has there been modules made with content directly taken from copyrighted books, but even game servers have been extablished on the net where players join in online campaigns and enjoy the work that a private development team and designers have wrought.

So bearing all that in mind I think you're treading on safe and secure ground. Take my :2c: for what it's worth. Again thanks for the hard work you've put into your module, no one else has taken up the initiative.

"Take my :2c: for what it's worth"

Ah Ah ah! It's best if I do Not take your 2 cents. Remember, no profit from this!

LOL, seriously, I think you may be right and I just want to make sure I don't affend anyone. Thank you for your input.

Just to let everyone know, there is a demo version of my module that I posted earlier if anyone has NWN and the 2 expansions. I've already ran into some glitches that I'm correcting as I speak (believe it or not, I don't do too much playtesting cause I'm spending so much time creating and building!)

Here's the link for the zip:

You can take 2 White Gold Cents. Copyright law doesn't cover that.

major update!

Post by Caerroil Wildfish »

I have a new updated demo of Despiser's Doom for any playtester out there. If you downloaded the previous module from the earlier post here, delete it and replace the mod and hakpaks with this one. I did some major overhauls on the Park area to make it more modern looking.

So far, I have not received one response concerning my module. Has anyone tried it? I'm considering just letting this project go if there is not enough interest.

Last chance!

Post by Caerroil Wildfish »

Well, I'm just sending out one more message concerning this module to see if ANYONE has interest in even trying it out! I can't believe with all the interest I APPEARED to generate, not one person has even sent me a reply about the module. I know most TC fans would really enjoy it but if there isn't enough interest, I guess I'll just drop the project all together.

If you have any questions about installing the game, you can contact me on yahoo messenger or email with my username fishbox27

Hope to hear from someone out there!

PS- Can't wait for Oct. 21st!

any luck?

Post by Caerroil Wildfish »

Were you guys able to install the game? I know the requirements are pretty steep, needing both expansions, but I have made use of a LOT of customized scripting and characters. Let me know if there's any issues with it.

Can't wait to hear at least one opinion of it!

Well on the strength of this thread I went out and bought Neverwinter Nights - Platinum Edition (has both expansion packs and all patches.) I have also played your game so far I think.

I'll put my comments under spoiler tags so that those who want to play can be surprised themselves!

In summary, I think you game has great promise and I'm looking forward to future installments!
Spoiler
First, does this section end at Trells house? For some reason I can't enter. I've opened up your MOD with tools and it seems to end there. Either I need a more up-to-date MOD or I'm at the end.

I was surpised and smiled at Linden and Roger being in at the start. I also tried an "EVIL" orientation and then killed the Creator. BOY, did that piss everyone off!! LMAO. Of course, I didn't survive.

Being good the next time, I went thru the paces, and get the white gold - then woosh ... in the Land. There does seem to be some glitches at the picnic table. If I talk to people after the beggar is "remains" the responses don't reflect the changed status.

In the Land I thought the scene with Drool and Lord Foul were very well done. However, I don't picture Lord Fould as a "ghost". More as a dark outline of a "regal" man with "carrion" eyes! Also, don't attack him either!!!

It took me a while to figure out how to get Lena moving! [This was my first time using Neverwinter.] Also my view of the Watch is much HIGHER and smaller. I'm assuming you're using game author's license due to limitations of the game engine.

Innovative approach to avoid a rape scene, however... Lena's rape is fundamental to the birth of Elena - High Lord in the Illearth War. Also the Ranyhyn's relationship with the Ringthane is significantly impacted by his deal with the Ranyhyn to visit Lena each year. Lastly, Trell probably wouldn't be pushed to his "ritual of desecration" without the complex pressures of Lena's rape, sacrifice, Atirian's sacrifice and then Elena - the Ringwielder's daughter but Trell's granddaughter chosing the Ringwielder over Trell. Some food for thought ....

In Mithil Stonedown trying to get into the houses was frustrating. Only one showed the "door" tool ... and that wouldn't let me enter.

Lastly, occaisonally my character's body went invisible (and sometimes the others.) I don't know if it's your game or my system.
Well that's my initial feedback. While I have tried to provide constructive criticism for your game's improvement, my overall impression is WOW! It is VERY impressive. I look forward to your improvements and your continuance of the story. Good luck - I'm anxiously awaiting my next opportunity to test your game!

THANKS!!!
He/She who dies with the most toys wins! Wait a minute ... I can't die!!!
