Favroite Lord Foul Moniker

Post by Brinn of the Haruchai »

Got inspiration for this on my last thread--What is your favorite Lord Foul name---for me it has to be Corruption----this word, while only one word has meaning on SOOOOOO many different levels. Corrupting the land, the people, existence itself, The arch of time, heck even our world ( ie Joan Covenant).

For me it has to be Fangthane the Render.
Although Despair also strikes a chord with me. Of all the names this really describes what Lord Foul is. Personification of despair or despite.

A-Jeroth of the Seven Hells

Was I the only person to initially think that was some reference to Kevin & The Seven Wards in some sort of millenia long propaganda twist?

Fangthane the Render. It's just so...rendish.

I'm all for Soulcrusher.

But I like The Gray Slayer too. If "like" is the right word.

I have always liked a-Jeroth, myself.

Tell me, has the board ever explored the presence of religious imagery and association in TC?

That's tough...
I'd have to say Corruption or Grey Slayer sounds the most fiendish.

I like all the above, but I guess I always liked "Foul" ie: when TC says something like "Damnation, Foul you bastard!" Just like Corruption, a single word that conveys a number of meanings..... :2c:

I also liked "Foul," simply because it seems more...personal than the others. Whenever TC uses it, it's almost as if he's talking to/about someone of similar stature. For me, the other "names" seem more like titles, and they just don't have the same impact, which is why I also don't like using Covenant's titles. For me, "Foul" is analagous to "Covenant," and to use Foul's other names would be like using one of the many titles Covenant managed to accumulate during his visits to the Land. Ringthane Vs. Fangthane, Unbeliever Vs. Despiser, Giantfriend Vs. Soulcrusher, etc.

"Fangthane" and "You Bastard" seem to ring well in my ears. :D

"Corruption" and "The Grey Slayer" are my personal preferences....

I always liked Foul's little speech in "Invitation To A Betrayal" where he recites the various names given to him by the denizens of the Land. Wish I had the book handy to quote from it....

The quaint little story of how Foul got his title.

For more reference, and a list of Foul's various names with cultural origin:

I like the way that Foul's several names or titles gives the idea that he has tentacles of evil, through which he works his several ways of deception and destruction. Reminds me of the 7 headed beast spoken of in Revelation. Didn't Satan have four names? Satan, Devil, Serpent, Dragon.....

Anyway....Soulcrusher stood out to me the most, since that seemed to be his main focus.....destroying or debilitating the soul (mind) and distorting the thinking, destroying hope.
To me foul was best described as Soulcrusher.
