Yeah I agree with that. I thought I'd be rating this album much higher than I did - it's because of the "cheap filler" and "meandering rubbish" to use Dave's words.Sgt.Null wrote:What drags down the album is the filler. Three instrumentals is too much. Take those off and it would have been a 7.4 album for me.

I'll listen to your links tomorrow. And will do a quick review of Metallic Spheres.

The Orb - Metallic Spheres (feat. David Gilmour)

Released: October 2010
StevieG rating: 2/10
This is not my type of music. Ambient techno?? No. I can't do it. This is the first and last time I am listening to this. I'll give it a 2 for production, which is good. But I don't get anything out of this music, and Dave's contribution does not enhance it. Gilmour has writing credits, which almost makes it worse.
Metallic Side
StevieG rating: 2/10
I don't know what to say. There are tracks in there somewhere but I don't have the energy to split it up. I endured it. Perhaps drugs would help...
Sphere Side
StevieG rating: 2/10
More of the same. Nothing of note to enhance anything by Dave. Nothing stands out. I can only be grateful that it's over...

I personally am looking forward to going into bat very firmly on the Gilmour side of things when the argy-bargy eventually starts.
Of course I have to agree that the whole of Gilmour + Waters was greater than the sum of its parts...
...but to me,when looking at them individually post being joined at the hip, Waters is diminished more than Gilmour (though both are in some way less).
That's because for Gilmour it's always first and foremost been about the music, whereas for Waters, it's always been about the grand concept (with the attendant risk of disappearing rapidly up his own ass in a fit of grandiloquent pomposity).
Ergo, if viewed on an intellectual basis, Waters's lyrics definitely tend to be more pithy, meaningful and thought-provoking (for want of better terms). But I don't listen to music as an intellectual exercise - and Gilmour's sheer mastery of evoking emotion through his guitar playing bypasses intellect entirely and instantly hardwires directly into his audience's souls.
Okay, okay. I'll wait patiently for the arguments to start raging before weighing in any further

Newsflash: the word "irony" doesn't mean "a bit like iron"
Shockingly, some people have claimed that I'm egocentric... but hey, enough about them

How very restrained of you TFTheFallen wrote:Okay, okay. I'll wait patiently for the arguments to start raging before weighing in any further![]()

I'll throw in a couple of things:
- I know it's Gilmour's intention for it to be first and foremost about the music. Unfortunately his music is extremely inconsistent, ranging from brilliant to downright crap. I'm getting more and more frustrated by his lack of ability (or care?) in finishing a song. 90% of them fade out which I find to be a lazy technique.
- Waters has a tendency to the overblown, but Gilmour is the pompous one. More later...
- Gilmour gives soul to his music through his guitar while the rest of the music is often lacking. Waters pours his soul and entire being into every project.
I'll leave it there for now.

I'm looking forward to reviewing Waters' solo efforts to see if it drags as much as the Gilmour solo review process.

The Orb w/ David Gilmour - Metallic Spheres
1) Metallic Side (28:42)
1) Metallic Spheres
2) Hymns to the Sun
3) Black Graham
4) Hiding in Plain View
5) Classified
Metallic Side - I couldn't find any actual time divisions. For what it is I enjoyed it. I like ambient to a point. In fact I found the brief snippets of words / vocals to be unnecessary. Gilmour fit in well, colouring the songs but not overwhelming them. This is perfect background music for doing art.
Null Rating - 6 out of 10.
2) Spheres Side (20:12)
1) Es Vedra
2) Hymns to the Sun (Reprise)
3) Olympic
4) Chicago Dub
5) Bold Knife Trophy
Spheres Side - the same as side one. I do find it annoying the gave names to pieces of the music but no time stamps so we could review each piece.
Null Rating - 6 out of 10.
3] Cult of Youth Ambient Mix (Parts 1 & 2) (5:35)
[this is a bonus track. This is awful. Just noise and unpleasant at that. Can't imagine anyone enjoying it.
Null Rating - 0 out of 10.
Album Rating - 6 out of 10.
I did not include the bonus in the ranking.

I particularly enjoyed the interviews. It's good to get some background context to things.
I was also heartened to hear that Dave enjoyed the Live8 reunion and that it felt good to catch up with Roger. Even though they don't talk to each other much, it was nice to hear that.

Rattle That Lock

Released: September 2015
StevieG rating: 6.5/10
David Gilmour's fourth solo album could almost be described as eclectic. It's a mixture of soft rock with a bit of ambient, and - wait for it - jazz! There's even a song in there that sounds a bit like a waltz. Overall, I like this album.
5 A.M.
StevieG rating: 6/10
Initially I thought "Here we go, another intro song - yawn" and I was partially right. It starts with bird noises! But then it moves fairly quickly into very pleasant guitar. This is one of his better intro songs. It kind of feels like it's going somewhere but unfortunately it just fades out.
Rattle That Lock
StevieG rating: 5/10
This is a very pop-y track. I'm not sure I'd use it as the title track. There's nothing particularly wrong with it I guess, it's just a bit... meh. Fades out...
Faces of Stone
StevieG rating: 8/10
I love the piano intro, and then the 3/4 waltz-like quality of this song. Dave's voice is really pleasant at the beginning. Lyrics sound like Gilmour! Those aside, I really like the feel of this song. His guitar solos from On an Island to this record are just right. The bridge is a bit iffy, but it gets back to the main theme pretty quickly. The end solo is great. Unfortunately again, it fades out (I know, you're gonna get annoyed with me for continuing to say it, but it's really starting to shit me). I like this song though.
A Boat Lies Waiting
StevieG rating: 7/10
This one has a slow start. A very slow start. A slow, ambient, slow start... Some nice piano comes in eventually, and it's a pleasant little meandering song. And then we get some beautifully harmonised singing, and transforms from a standard ambient track to a moving tribute of a song. I'm disappointed that it seems to have just begun, and suddenly it fades out into nothing. So much more could have been made of this song.
Dancing Right in Front of Me
StevieG rating: 7/10
Here we have another pleasant track, with a bit of jazz influence. There's a particular section of the song that definitely jazzy. Some classy guitar work again, and then some jazz-infused piano baby! It smoothly smokes along with some nice guitar, nice backing vocals, nice piano. Extended guitar to the end, which of course fades out, but you know, sometimes that's ok. Or not...
In Any Tongue
StevieG rating: 9/10
The music is great. The music video is absolutely devastating. It rivals many of Roger Waters' evocative work. The guitar is awesome. After nearly 7 minutes it effing fades out which is the only disappointment.
Beauty
StevieG rating: 6/10
He's improved his instrumentals. After 2 minutes of noodling, the nice rhythmic guitar comes in with some lazy drums, followed by some nice bass and piano. Just when it gets going... yeah, it fades out.
The Girl in the Yellow Dress
StevieG rating: 6/10
David "Jazz" Gilmour.
I don't mind a bit of jazz. This is very very jazz! I must admit I need to adjust for a while, but once that happens, it's a nice little ditty. Some snazzy sax. And...
Today
StevieG rating: 5/10
Starts as a hymn. And then moves into a weird something that is nothing like a hymn. I can't hear any return to the intro in the track. It's ok, but I don't enjoy it much to be honest. The guitar is good, as should be expected.
Nice bit of keyboard work too. And guess what? It fades out...
And then...
StevieG rating: 6/10
For an instrumental it's nice. The guitar is melodic, it has a laid back gentle, content feel to it. There's some nice acoustic guitar near the end, and I'm keen to hear more, but Dave insists on fading it out which is more than frustrating.

I plan on posting the Live 8 at the ending of the solo works. I am hoping there is vid of Nick and/or Dave when they joined Roger on the Wall tour for a song or two. I know there is at least one video of Roger joining Nick on his Saucer tour.StevieG wrote:I particularly enjoyed the interviews. It's good to get some background context to things.

Rattle That Lock
5.A.M. - David seems to have missed the birds. Dave's guitar playing hear us so precise. I can imagine him playing this on his houseboat at 5 am. It is one of his better openers. Excluding the orchestra this is all him.
Null Rating - 6 out of 10
Rattle That Lock - inspired by a four note jingle from the French trains announcements. Lyrics by Polly. Guy Pratt on bass. I quite like it, it moves along. Sounds like Gilmour's Floyd work. A good start.
Null Rating - 7 out of 10
Faces of Stone - lyrics by Gilmour. The waltz is perfect for the lyrics. It seems very French country side to me. Dave's solo is perfect as usual. I like the acoustic that takes over from the piano begining that Dave plays.
Null Rating - 7 out of 10
A Boat Lies Waiting - a beautiful tribute to Rick Wright. That's his voice we hear right before Dave stsrts singing. Polly wrote the lyrics. Crosby and Nash provide the lovely bgv's. That's Brian Eno's brother, Roger on piano. I am biased I'll admit, but this is near perfect.
Null Rating - 9 out of 10.
Dancing Right in Front of Me - Dave wrote the lyrics and did a great job with them. It does have a jazzy feel. I like Dave's solos and the repeating guitar motif he uses throughout the song. That's also him on the piano solo.
Null Rating - 8 out of 10
In Any Tongue - the video is devastating. Polly wrote the lyrics, and they are so good that I could imagine Roger writing them. "I hear "Mama" sounds the same in any tongue." Dave's sounds like his guitar is weeping.
Null Rating - 10 out of 10
Beauty - this would be so.much better if it started at the two minute mark. It features Roger Eno again. Takes too long to get started but has a nicevgroove when it does.
Null Rating - 6 out of 10
The Girl in the Yellow Dress - seems like fairly standard cocktail jazz. Polly wrote the lyrics. Jools Holland on piano. Rado Klose on guitar. Robert Wyatt on cornet. Too.much by the numbers for my taste.
Null Rating - 6 out of 10.
Today - sounds to me like a lullaby that cuts to a David Bowie funk fest.
Jon Carin on electric piano. Mica Paris on bgv. Guy Pratt on bass.
Polly wrote the lyrics and did bgv. It's a very odd song that doesn't fit the feel of the rest of the album. It would sound more proper on About Face.
Null Rating - 6 out of 10
and then... - beautiful way to end the album. Dave's guitsr shines throughout. And ends with sn acoustic played by an open fire with the birds singing in the background. Looks like Dave did a concept album after all.
Null Rating - 7 out of 10.
Album Rating - 7.2 out of 10.

Yes I Have Ghosts
Released: July 2020
StevieG rating: 7/10
We might as well finish off David Gilmour's work with his latest single, which I think was created to accompany his wife Polly Sampson's novel A Theatre for Dreamers.
It's a family affair, with Polly writing lyrics again, Dave music, and his daughter Romany playing harp and singing backing vocals. It is reminiscent of his previous two albums, and feels like it continues from there. The guitar playing is beautiful, Romany's contribution is nice, the lyrics are mostly a bit cliche, it fades out unexpectedly - nothing much has changed.
My favourite line is probably It's always the living that are haunting my nights. It feels relatable - it's not always the dead the haunt you.
Overall, it's an accomplished track.

It's nice for fans that there is so much material out there.StevieG wrote:I like the Saucerful rehearsals, and the Echoes one. Also the mini-doc of the tour.
Roger's the Body is next and a lot of fans have never heard it before. But itbis important in the growth of Roger as a writer. And it contains my favorite "unknown" Pink Floyd song.
