~fly fly little wing, fly where only angels sing~
~this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you~
...for then I could fly away and be at rest. Sweet rest, Mom. We all love and miss you.
The covers look cool!!! Very classy!! I may pick them up because my original PB's are falling apart!! (they are 20 years old after all) But the ring looks like yellow gold, and not white. Could just be my monitor.

I had a houseful of company, so couldn't get online at all. Nice to know I was missed.

Ah, thank you. Furls is right, though, they are yellow gold. I guess someone wasn't paying attention when they designed the cover...that looks more like the One Ring than Covenant's white gold wedding ring...
Cover design is by Kathleen M. Lynch and the photographer is Chris Collins (Corbis); it's an absolute insult to.................. to everything for it to be yellow gold.
It’s insulting, deplorable, vile....
fwiw, I read the First Chronicles a LONG time ago, b/4 the 2nd set was published, and they had such an effect on me that my wife had my wedding ring made of white gold.

argh!!!!!
I couldn't agree more!
I know we've (I've) complained about bad covers before, but this takes the cake, folks.
Is it too much to ask, that covers be at least RELEVANT to the book in at least some small way?

I emailed Del Rey about the gold rings on the covers, and I just got this response today:
Dear Ms. [me]:
Thank you for writing in. We certainly know that Thomas Covenant's ring is made of white gold. Sorry you think our covers show it as too yellowish.
Mr. Donaldson was delighted with them!
Sincerely,
Betsy Mitchell

I guess that shows us....
Halfway down the stairs Is the stair where I sit. There isn't any other stair quite like it. I'm not at the bottom, I'm not at the top; So this is the stair where I always stop.
Well, if you think about it, that ring has been around for a while now. I don't know about you guys, but my wedding band isn't nearly as white as it was when I bought it. I understand that they all tend to get a little yellowish and that the only way to avoid it is to buy platinum.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Unbelievable!
I wonder if SRD was equally delighted to see a five-fingered Thomas Covenant on the SFBC omnibus edition of First Chronicles?
I recall a story in which SRD had to change part of TWL to fit the cover (he added that Brinn covered TC with a robe on the way to Glimmermere, if I remember correctly.) He wasn't very happy about that, as the story goes.
I suppose that I will be complaining about bad covers for many years to come....
