But Vader couldn't have known he was about to die until the very end. I'm talking about earlier in the film, when Luke confronted him on the Ewok planet.Darth Revan wrote:Yeah, i suppose your right, but while your about to die, you would generally get a bit vulnerable. heh

Fair enough, but given the situation he was in, you can't blame him.MEGATON dAN wrote:But Vader couldn't have known he was about to die until the very end. I'm talking about earlier in the film, when Luke confronted him on the Ewok planet.
best Star Wars movie so far
A New Hope & Empire Strikes Back represent the greatest one-two punch in sci-fi cinema. Empire set such a high mark for the saga that every subsequent SW movie has had to try to live up to its standards, but in my view not one of them has come close. Think about it: when Empire comes to mind, I find no shortage of great things to say about it. When the other SW films come to mind (except A New Hope), I have to struggle to find something good to say. There are good things, yes: on their own terms, ROTJ and the prequels are exciting adventures whose production values alone have few equals. Yet, they will always be judged, fairly or unfairly, against the greatness of Empire.

I've mentioned this before. Jedi is cool but only 63% of it. It can't bee considered great. Its like having a pie with 37% filled with maggots. Would this pie win a contest this way? No. No matter how wonderful a pie might be, it couldn't win a pie contest with maggots in it. Its simple math.A Pie wrote:...I mean, aprt from the Ewoks, Jedi beats it in every way!

I love Empire as much as the next guy, and it is one of the best middle trilogy films around, but do you ever wonder that people only pick this film b/c the bad guy wins. It's a very "IN" thing to pick this film as your favorite, hmm, jsut a thought, I'm probably guilty of this myself.

That is an interesting point, Fiz. That never occurred to me before. I may be subconsciously influenced by Vader's victory. My official reason is that I, without reservation, believe it to be the superior film in every respect.FizbansTalking_Hat wrote:I love Empire as much as the next guy, and it is one of the best middle trilogy films around, but do you ever wonder that people only pick this film b/c the bad guy wins. I have no problem with people saying this is their favorite, many of the most crucial aspects of the Luke's story occurs in this film, the revalation of his father being Darth Vader, Yoda teaching him more and more of the Jedi way, dealing with his anger, etc, but I still think that a lot of Star Wars Snobs claim this ast heir favorite becaues its a very fashionable thing to do. Cheers.

I liked Empire, but the downer ending keeps it from being my favorite. Which is why number 3, Birth of the Empire or whatever it's to be called, will also be a downer and therefore doomed in any favorite poll.
My fave is Return of the Jedi. The first half in Jabba's fortress and barge are just brilliant. I also really liked Vader's redemption, the light-saber duel and the land-speeder chase.
The Ewoks were a deplorably transparent marketing ploy, but they aren't enough to ruin the film for me.
So here's my order:
Return of the Jedi
Empire Strikes Back
A New Hope
Attack of the Clones
The Phantom Menace
Although I don't believe the latter movies are the train-wrecks that most critics seem to think, they do suffer from two things. A pre-ordained already known outcome (and a bad one at that) and the jarring inconsistency of the far more futuristic special effects being shown during what is supposed to be an earlier time-frame.
Also, they need a character rapport like the first trilogy had between Han, Leia and Luke.
And one minor quibble - Lucas made a tactical blunder in Phantom Menace, when he had Darth Maul fight TWO Jedis simultaneously. Because this has the pradoxical effect of making the villain the underdog and therefore sympathetic to the audience.
I love the music in the new films, love the special effects, love some of the plot developments. I'm not even a detractor of the romance angle. But I think Lucas should have concentrated on trilogy THREE, not ONE, because then he could have done a story without the bummer ending, and also the more modern special effects would have made sense within the context of the setting.

Well, I wouldn't go quite so far with my analogy as you have, Tom. ROTJ has great moments throughout the film, and if the pie judge had only tasted those parts, then the film ranks right up there with Empire and New Hope. Even the Ewoks could have been believeable, if they had some hidden powers that Vader couldn't have sensed. But all they had was their bravery, and if that was all it took, then the Federation would have never fallen to the Empire in the first place. It's almost like Lucas was studying the Revolutionary War while plotting out ROTJ (I.E. - Little old US wins freedom from the English Empire because England was busy warring with Europe at the time). The thing is the US had to fight England with similar weapons, homefield advantage, and even then had to employ an early form of guerrilla warfare just to keep from getting decimated right away. Compare that to 200 Ewoks with sticks.....

I would have to say my favorite is Empire because I like dark stories...and when Vader claims to be Luke's father is the only time I can ever remember gasping out loud in shock at a movie in my entire life.
But my favorite sequence would be the opening of Jedi, the whole thing in the Sandhold with the hustin...errr, Jabba's Palace with his weird guards.
I just don't care as much for the two prequel films. The very poor acting by the people playing Padme and Annakin is a complete turn off for me.
and don't even get me started on Jar Jar Binks.
