It feels so dynamic but I think there's some scripting going on here. In Episode 1, Julie was quick (a little TOO quick) to point out that since TCs nerves were dead he wouldn't be able to make a good grimace with his face. This is just TOO intelligent a comment from Julie.

I think their boyfriends are fans of the book and put them up to it.
