I had them all except the top word. Could have been GRAPE. Or GRAVE. GRAVE would make 4-down VONCE, which we all remember from the episode of M*A*S*H, where Hawkeye and BJ were trying to do a crossword puzzle, and were stuck on a 5-letter Yiddish word for bedbug. So he called somebody he knew at another distant unit or whatever, who he said was a genius with crosswords. "He does the Sunday New York Times crossword in ink." The guy was out when Hawkeye called, so he left a message to call back, and that it was an emergency. Well, when the friend returned and got that message, he assumed Hawkeye had a medical emergency. Friend is also a surgeon, so he grabbed his CO and traveled quite a distance to help out. Found out there was no emergency, so was worried about having dragged his CO around for nothing. Also, couldn't think of the needed word. So then an emergency developed, and their extra hands were extremely welcome. But when it was over, the CO says that, although it turned out to be a good thing he and the friend were there, there wasn't an emergency when they arrived, so wondered why they had been called. Hawkeye explained the misunderstanding. CO says something like, "What?!? I busted a hump to get, and all because you didn't know VONCE!?!" And Hawkeye, BJ, and friend all go, "Vonce!!" So I chose GRAVE to get VONCE, instead of GRAPE to get PONCE. Turns out M*A*S*H is less useful in these situations than you might think.

I love it Fist! As a slight thread drift… does anyone know if M*A*S*H was based on, or influenced by Catch-22? I loved NASH but I don’t remember that particular scene. I also love Catch-22 (the book, I haven’t seen the series) and read it some time after watching MASH, but I did instantly think of the similar style. Anyway…
