A Warning about the Third Chronicles!

Post by Revan »

I just wanted to warn you all... to not get too excited about these upcoming books. I know that most of you are expecting alot out of these stories... and that is what worries me... you see, whenever I've been expecting to be great... usually doesn't live up to what I thought it was going to be... Just a warning, that's all... if you expect these books to be the greatest of all time (Even if they are :P) You'll be let down...

So keep a level head... ok?

heh, I'm well aware of my advice of keeping a level head seems hypocritical... so no need to comment... :P

I would guess that the author expects that the bar is quite high for the 3rd series, which may be why he waited so damn long.

I'm trying to make a serious point... I was really let down when I read the "The Return of the King", I mean I expected it to be so much better... I'm just trying to help... :(

I understand that type of disappointment, but I beleive this to be different. SRD is aware of the social complexities and fan demand for quality that a 20 year TC vacuum has created.

I think the best way to avoid being disappointed by Runes would be to get yourself in the correct state of mind - time a re-read of the first and second chrons so that you finish right before you get Runes, and read it as a continuation of the story. That way, rather than expecting something amazing you'll be satisfied with anything that fits well with the rest of the chrons.

I do not fear "sequelitis". SRD is too heavyweight an artist to be susceptible. He knows that the mere mention of his name gets our neurotransmitters flowing, and he wouldn't waste potential response by writing anything insubstantial.

I do somewhat fear that the story will develop in directions hard to accept. (SRD, as much as or more than Card and Ellison, always puts his characters through Hades; that's a given, and I don't dread it, at least not differently than I've dreaded each new chapter of TOT this time around! But I'm wondering if the core world view, ontology, and morality of the Third Chronicles will be recognizably of a piece with the first two series or will go where I cannot follow.) It's hard to see how a story in which Covenant became Corruption could be a spiritually enlarging read, even if it made an arcane point about the relationship of good and evil.

And I hope my people remain worthy of respect!

I must admit that I am far more excited about these books than I should be (sorry, Rath! I'll try not to be...*pout*)...and reading the prologue has only worsened my condition *grin* The thing I'm most worried about, actually, is having to wait again for the rest of the books after Runes...

By the way, sorry about my long absence...I've been without a working computer for a while...

Iryssa! Welcome back! You missed all the fun...and pies. :)

Lord Revan makes a good point (really he does) and I abide by it.

As for Murrin's recommendation to re-read the books right before Runes: yessir, that's what we're doing in Dissection. 8)
