My grandfather was a great soldier. He destroyed the country of Vietnam. He was also responsible for the eruption at Krakatoa.

I was in submarines during the cold war, 1984 - 1991. Never saw combat, except once in a bar in Barcelona.

Thanks, Duck and Luci, from a guy with two national defense ribbons and also no combat experience (though I did manage to send a fair amount of posts here while doing circles in a combat zone ;)). And thanks to all the other vets.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

My grandfather was an airplane mechanic during WWII and Korea. He never saw combat, but he made sure that the pilots could get out there and see some.

My dad was also in the Army Air Corps. He spent a chunk of WWII in Iceland, well before Reykjavik was the coolness capital of the globe -- which alone ought to deserve a big thanks. Here's to you, Dad -- and to all the other vets, too.

I saw a bunch of action in the Terran/Protoss/Zerg wars of 1998. A lot of brave souls lost their lives during that time.
