*Warning* New Virus

Okay, guys.....I don't really have much information on this at all right now, but my husband, who's a professional techie, says that a new, and particularly nasty, virus started making it's way around the net yesterday. This one targets credit card and bank account information. Now I hear rumors of these kinds of viruses all the time, but I trust Colin to know whether it's for real, and this is the first time he's been convinced it was. I'm not supposed to be here at all right now.....I've been forbidden to go online at all until he gets some more information, and can make sure it's safe.....and that's even with our firewall (Zone Alarm), AVG, and Spybot running.

So....I'm not sure about the specifics, but I'll try to post more information when I get it. I may have to do so illicitly again.... :? But I thought y'all should know. I would absolutely NOT recommend getting online at all right now without at least a firewall running, and maybe a couple of Virus scanners as well.....at least until somebody finds out something more about this.

Sorry y'all....not trying to be an alarmist, but I wanted to put the warning out....;)

True, Birdie, and I was a victim of it about a month ago. One of them is some people who can get access to your credit card or debit card number and use it on their site to scam money from your account. They mostly take amounts like 9.95, which at a glance will mystify you and you pause and think you may have bought something and just forgot to put it down or forgot what it was.........
Then you realize you didn't, but too late.......by the time you run it down, have the bank to check, and find it out, they have already dumped that web site, and moved on to scam the next million or so. If they can scam at least a million a week, they are making big money, easily, quickly, and the bank wont pursue it for YOUR 9.95. In my case, they got me for two months in a row, before I tried to notify them to tell them it was a mistake. By that time I realized it was no mistake. It was robbery!!!
I am told that paypal, aol wallet, and all the others are not safe, no matter what they tell you. Paypal is where they got me.

Someone has been scamming Earthlink for 4 months now-it will say your account is not up to date, complete with Earthlink logo and "safe-secure" warnings. I fell for it and saw a $250 dollar charge to Amazon.com. Fortunately my bank has an "idiot clause" and reimbursed me. :faint: Moral of the story is if you're not buying anything direct on the net never give out you credit card number to ANYONE! (besides my server-payment is direct withdrawal-kicks self in head for 5th time)

heh, I have about every protection against viruis on my computer... :P No virius will reach me without my nowing so 8)

Has anyone heard about the Orangeman virus? Apparently it spams message boards. It's apparently based off the old Darth V2.02.01 virus.

There are a lot of scam artists out there. I have been getting quite a few emails lately telling me that my credit card info for my ISP is out of date and I have to update it. The messages look incredibly real. The thing is, they go into my spam basket rather than my real email basket, and real messages from AOL go into the real basket...so I have been lucky enough to not be stung...yet. :-x

It's hard to figure out those e-mails at times, I mean, anyone can put together a nice imitation these days wiht the right programs. Thats why its best if you're updating or anything like that to just go to the website itself and od it there, most of them have a secure type of encryption that helps prevent such issues, but just when the good guys think of something smart, the bad will think of how to take advantage.

I deleted two bogus E-Bay claims yesterday saying my account is not up to date, or requires more information-I've never been on E-bay in my life!!! 8O

has anyone else been getting emails from people claiming to have inherited millions, needing someone in the states to help them get it by using your bank account? Really, would anyone be stupid enough to fall for this???? I started emailing them back telling them to cease and desist, along with a few other choice words, but it does no good. Now, I just delete them.
