Alien

Post by FizbansTalking_Hat »

Someone mentioned Alien in the Riddick Thread. I just wanted to put up a thread to see who all out there enjoys this film, and/or the sequels. What were your thoughts on the entire legacy, all the films, crap, good, bad. I have them all in one massive 12 disc box set, and its amazing, one of the best film packages I've ever had.

Personally I find the original Alien to be the best. I loved Alien(s) and James Cameron directed the sequel brilliantly and made the story his own, but still, the original was just so amazing, props to Ridley, Cheers.

I think Alien is the best overall, but ti tends to drag a little when compared to the later installments. Aliens is a decent bug-squashing action flick, and I always enjoy seeing the cocky marines taking a kicking, but it reduces the aliens to an appalling degree. Alien 3 isn't as bad as most people make out, IMO; it's essentially a rehash of the first film, but I do approve of the ending. Alien Ressurection has Winona Ryder in it.

I have all four films on either dvd or vhs. Alien is a near masterpiece. A claustrophobic thriller that satisfies and shocks to the point of breathlessness. A sci fi fan's dream. ALIENS is a worthy successor that take the scenario to an action adventure level that is a tremendous achievement in its own right. Though I enjoy Alien 3 and 4, I find each of these films lacking in some fundamental way, either in originality or concept. The talk of an Alien 5 is exciting and dreadful at the same time.

Indeed, having the Quadrilogy Boxed Set, the commentaries that informative interveiws give an insight into the many issues that films 3 & 4 faced. Personally 4 should not hav ebeen made the way it was in my opinion, the stoyr was just awful. It could have been done in a much better way, talk of alien 5 you hit it right Tom.

It's so awesome yet so disgusting at the same time. Still, can't wait for Aliens Vs. Predator. That is goin to be a kickass film.

Yes I'm sorta intrigued by the Alien/Predator faceoff but NOT Jason/Freddy! :D

After I saw Alien at the theater I hung my poster of The Nosferatu on one wall, Daredevil on the other and listened the Tom Petty and the Heartbreaker's Damm the Torpedoes for two years running...Aliens was compelling, but for some reason (even tho it was enivitable) couldn't get into the "Space Marine" concept at all-so the series lost me after that.

Yes, sir!

Alien 3, on the other hand, left me disillusioned about the film series. I think director David Fincher stepped over the line by electing to kill off Newt and Corporal Hicks. Okay, Hicks getting bumped off is maybe par for the course for a soldier, though that doesn't excuse Fincher...

but killing off Newt??!! :x

After all the horrors her character had braved through in Aliens, Newt was a survivor.

So to have her just die like that in Alien 3 was a knuckleheaded move that was guaranteed to alienate fans like me (excuse the pun). It's more than a simple matter of convenient scripting; it's a betrayal of the movie audience's trust. James Cameron had established in Aliens that no matter what happened, Newt would endure. So by killing Newt, Fincher was giving fans like me the finger.

Didn't bother seeing Alien Resurrection. Didn't pay attention to it.

If James Cameron, or Ridley Scott (highly unlikely), were to come back to this franchise, then I might have reason to see another Alien movie. That's a pretty big "If."

Very pessimistic about Aliens Vs. Predator. I wouldn't be surprised at all if it was a hack job (okay, a very expensive hack job) done simply to cash in on the names. Anybody remember Predator 2?

I read the Alien vs. Predator comic YEARS ago. 4-issue mini, iirc. It wasn't bad. I doubt the movie is based on it. :)

First movie is all that has been said about it. I liked the second more than most I think. Seeing the egg chamber with the Queen was just CREEPY!!!!

I enjoyed all the movies, though probably the first two more that the third. Resurrection wasn't too bad, and CovJr makes a valid point:

Hey Matrix,

I liked Predator 2 just as much as Predator...but I might be in the minority.
War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. I like Alien the best, because I prefer the gradual build-up of suspense to the guts and glory of James Cameron's effort, which is still a very good example of its genre.

Alien 3 was a bit mixed up. The idea of the penal colony was a good one, but it maybe needed something else added to the mix towards the end. I really enjoyed the first half of Resurrection (I thought the new kick-ass Ripley made her death in Alien 3 worthwhile), but once the Aliens were out, it seemed as though they had plenty of cinematographic ideas and very few plot ones. It's a shame, because Sigourney Weaver really played her part well. It's always nice to see Ron Perlman and Brad Dourif, although Call seemed to have been invented solely to create a part for Winona Rider. One of the first rules of script-writing is to ensure that all of your main characters are central to the story, and Call just isn't.

I saw the director's cut of Alien when it came out, and I wasn't sure about it. Some of the added scenes did give a bit more depth to the story, but the scene in the Alien's nest really diminished the sense of urgency during Ripley's struggle to get off the Nostromo. The scene where Dallas consults Mother about his chances of survival was cut too.

True statement: It is a bad idea to let a 7-year-old girl watch the Alien movies. She will get some very bad (good, if you're evil) ideas as to how slime can be used to attack ones parents. Oh, and there was that impersonating Ripley thing....

Loved the Predator movies. Loved the Predator dudes. (Hehheh, Land + Predator = ...... Raver madness.)

Am I the only one who watches the whole dvd, special features and stuff? The "making of" stuff is kinda freaky...
