STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE
Star Trek: Enterprise was going to be great. I was so excited when I first heard of the concept (I have been a long time proponent of taking Star Trek back to its origins and exploring the vast Star Trek historical timeline). During the last season or so of Voyager I read from many sources that Paramount was interested in creating a new show. I thought of several possibilities that I found intriguing. The one I favored the most was a rotating 4 era show (similar to a mystery series I used to watch as a kid with 3 or 4 different detectives rotating each week.) 1. A TOS era show that followed the adventures of a different star ship than Enterprise. The Intrepid or Constellation. 2. A movie era show at the time of Admiral Kirk based on another crew. 3. A STNG/DS9/VOY era show, again with a different crew/ship than Enterprise with possible guest appearances by familiar characters. 4. A future era, possibly Enterprise based. I knew assembling a large cast and having 4 different sets might be daunting but I was excited by the possibilities of fleshing out some of the back-story and unexplored plot tangents of Star Trek in general.
Then I heard of what the Enterprise premise was going to be and I thought it was a stroke of genius. Now here is a chance to really dig deep into Star Trek history. So many events and characters of the past were mentioned during the course of Star Trek that getting to experience them first hand would be tremendous. (Kind of like SRD writing a series of books based on the Old Lords.)
HOWEVER!
Though Enterprise began in the right spot it has repeatedly trampled the established Star Trek timeline and outside of several interesting events in the first season, the program has formed an exclusive continuity bubble for itself that protects it from what we long time trek fans view as cosmic fact.I’ll give one example. Time travel before the TOS episode “Tomorrow is Yesterday”? NONSENSE! I watched season one with some fascination. I noted that the show seemed a little confused about the direction it wanted to go but that is common with most first seasons. With each new season I find myself less and less inclined to watch. (I find the Xindi plot line tiresome for the most part.) Bottom line is that Enterprise is simply not the show I wanted it to be and it is the first Star Trek spin off series that seems to have little reverence for the storylines set down by its predecessors. With the news that Enterprise will be under the direction of a new producer I have some hope that season 4 will redeem itself in my eyes.

It can't and won't. The inherent problem with the show is that unless they admit that Enterprise is not part of the timeline we all know and love, it is conceptually hamstrung.
It cannot create stories that undo future events (likethe example you gave), or are inconsistant with the supossed technology of the day.
I liked the notion of a ship that was barely warp capable...that there was danger in space (as there always is)...but that the largest danger was just trying to be there.
The bottom line? The show is not as raw as i had hoped, and they are pinning their hopes on the conceptual juxtoposion of having a HOT Vulcan on board.

The asian girl is hot. Other than that, and the hot Vulcan girl, I'd say I have to agree with the concensus that the show is too tame, sterile; too "modern age ST" for my tastes. Still, the asian girl is HOT.
When the man with a 45 meets the man with a rifle, you said the man with a pistol is a dead man. Let's see if it's true.

So you've boiled Enterprise down to a single comment. "The asian girl is hot." That should be the tag line at the begining of the program. "Space. The final frontier and dude the asian girl is hot!"

You know, I'll be watching more of it as I have some time right now. Things I did like included the opening credits that were both familiar and a departure for standard ST fare; and the fact that it doesn't all rely on Scott Bakula to hold it together.

Yeah, I'm not exactly a "Trekkie", so maybe the fact that the opening music/video works for me is a good thing, new audience-wise. I plan on giving this show a shot at winning me over, and believe me, it will take more than pretty women to do that.
Though they sure don't hurt none.

Where My Heart Will Take Me
It?s been a long road, getting from there to here.
It?s been a long time, but my time is finally near.
And I can feel the change in the wind right now. Nothing?s in my way.
And they?re not gonna hold me down no more, no they're not gonna hold me down.
Cause I?ve got faith of the heart.
I?m going where my heart will take me.
I?ve got faith to believe. I can do anything.
I?ve got strength of the soul. And no one?s gonna bend or break me.
I can reach any star. I?ve got faith, faith of the heart.
It?s been a long night. Trying to find my way.
Been through the darkness. Now I finally have my day.
And I will see my dream come alive at last. I will touch the sky.
And they?re not gonna hold me down no more, no they're not gonna change my mind.
Cause I?ve got faith of the heart.
I?m going where my heart will take me.
I?ve got faith to believe. I can do anything.
I?ve got strength of the soul. And no one?s gonna bend or break me.
I can reach any star. I?ve got faith, faith of the heart.
I?ve known the wind so cold, I?ve seen the darkest days.
But now the winds I feel, are only winds of change.
I?ve been through the fire and I?ve been through the rain.
But I?ll be fine ...
Cause I?ve got faith of the heart.
I?m going where my heart will take me.
I?ve got faith to believe. I can do anything.

4 Seasons, wow, didn't think it had come this far. Bakula should stick to traveling back and forth in and out of time, thats all he was good for. Cheers.TOM C wrote:I'm not sure I want the thing cancelled but I would like to see it change radically. Probably won't get that. Ah, farewell dear Enterprise. At least you managed to last four seasons.

Fiz, I must disagree. Watching "Quantum Leap" is exactly the reason I never watch "Enterprise"!

To be fair Captain Pike commanded the Constitution Class NCC 1701 Enterprise. Enterprise NX-01 or whatever is a completely different ship. (funny we'd never heard of it before now.)dlbpharmd wrote:I thought Enterprise started out wrong from the beginning. Wasn't Christopher Pike the first captain of the Enterprise?

Tom, you're being too harsh. I have only watched about a half-dozen episodes, but it is definitely better than Voyager. It's a well produced show, and I'm glad I'm not "trekkie" enough to get sidetracked by the perceived inconsistencies betewwn this show and the others.

You are in a position to evaluate Enterprise in a way no genuine Star Trek fan is able to do. It reminds me of the times I've watched movie adaptations of popular novels that I hadn't read. Dune comes to mind. 2010, Return of the King and lets not forget LXG. I enjoyed all of those films without the baggage of being annoyed that they weren't completely faithful to the source material. If I had no interest in the back story of Star Trek I'd probably think Enterprise was a decent well produced sci fi program. Its seems clear that the producers are trying to target those viewers that aren't hung up on being loyal Star Trek enthusiasts. Unfortunately most of the pre sold audience for Enterprise is just like me. Hence the poor ratings. I’m sure Rick Berman hoped there were more dANs out there than there really are.dANdeLION wrote:Tom, you're being too harsh. Oh, so now I'm not 'genuine'. Whatever. It so happens I'm too involved with RL to give a rip at memorizing each and every episode I have watched. I have given every ST series a fair chance at winning me over, and 4 out of 5 did. And I'm sure many agree with Berman that the more dANs there are, the merrier.
