Most memorable names for Lord Foul

Post by Bannor »

Donaldson might as well have named him Dribble Hairybutt or Snotty Fiddlesticks.

OK, Caer, how did you find out my orc name??? Seriously, great sense of humor, Caer, welcome our corner of the computer asylum. :D

it just occured to me, that the name Sauron in Quenya comes from the word
saura, which means "foul, bad"...

so SRD did nothing else but reach for the classics:-)

Foul alone

Post by danlo »

Just the word Foul in the title of LFB got me interested in the series, originally. I said "hmmm so what's it about this guy that make's him so Foul?" and after finishing the Chrons the answer was "hmmm, pretty dam foul!"

I'll have you know I take my irrational fear of Bob the Builder very seriously!

I can't remember exactly when, but at some point during the Chronicles, I started to get this feeling of subdued menace about the Ravers, like they had the potential to be far more evil and destructive than they appeared, and were only held in check by Lord Foul's ambition. If left to their own devices, perhaps they could wreak greater havoc than we have yet seen from them.

Now that be truly interesting!!!

kudos re: the remarkable and awesome revelation!!

definitely agree .. the ravers potential for damage always seemed way higher than they realised .. (as in made real)

The Ravers

Post by Bannor »

I always thought of the Ravers as more terrible than Foul. It could be because they were in the story line more, but those guys were very scary!

it may be because they were also very primitive; evil is always much more scary if it is combines with stupidity; LF at least was cunning and intelligent

Ravers and Stupidity

Post by Bannor »

I think you have hit it right on, amanibhavam! Very good thinking. But, what about Drool: was there anyone more stupid than that guy? (Still think you've got a great point though)

I think Drool was so outright stupid, that he even failed to be evil; he was greedy, yes; and if his mates had succeeded in resurrecting him, then he would have been evil

Incidentally, Macht in Joan Macht Covenant is German for covenant. Donaldson has clearly done his research.

Maybe I'm over-simplifying things but what is wrong with a name being short and to the point? Ok - so it is a little trite - Lord Foul - but it is concise! Now, about what Foul's name was during Kevin's time - maybe SRD didn't feel it was important to the story to say what Foul was named as a lord. The point was that his betrayal wasn't found out until too late. And then, maybe SRD felt that LF already had too many names, i.e.,
a-Jeroth of the Seven Hells (my personal favorite!). Every race in the land had their own name for him!
The King has one more move.

I guess I need to start at the last page to read what the topic is. I read the first page and answered. When I checked my reply, I noticed that the topic was no longer LF but Drool! Sorry!
