Procol's got me

Post by Worm of Despite »

I just got one hell of a deal: their first four albums, 17 singles, B-sides, outtakes, and alternative takes. The price? 24 bucks, and that's with 1st class shipping! Needless to say, I'm ecstatic. The package reportedly has great sound quality, being a big improvement on the original vinyl. Amazing deal! All that for so little.

Anyway, about Procol Harum: they're definitely one of my favorite bands. Maybe more so than Pink Floyd. I don't know. But, anyway, they're the kind of band where, at first, you skip through their songs, going, "let's get to the hits." But when you start listening to their other stuff--that stuff that's not hits--you begin to see vast untold riches, and you wonder how you looked over it all. They're the kind of band that grows on you after repeated listening.

These guys are prog rock, but they're so different from their contemporaries (King Crimson, the Nice, Yes, Pink Floyd). The difference is their heavy use of organ/piano and Gary Brooker's melancholy vocals. Very Baroque classical-rock fusion--but not overdone. They're kind of like Jethro Tull, sort of, but I find them more interesting than Tull.

Sounds like a fantastic buy!! Congrats! Yes, I'll have to figure out a way to listen to them one day. There's a decent used cd store nearby, so I'll check there.

Here's the place where I got mine:

www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/ ... oding=UTF8

If you're gonna get it, don't buy it retail, cause that's 36 bucks. Click a little below that, where it says "used & new". There will be reputable sellers with very high ratings selling it brand new for as low as 19 bucks.

Procol's one of the more interesting groups of the 60s/70s, their musical integrity and inventiveness well worth hearing. One of the very few prog rock groups that weren't about drugged-out psychedelia or instrumental bombast.
