Ok so who's tried to create their own?

I've tried to write several novels, me and my friends made up a language much like pig latin but much much much cooler sounding, we also made an island, it was for health class... It was called Island Island, complete with a leper colony, cannibals and man-eating plants.

As for mapping geneology... The fathest I've gone with that was Jimmy the Wonder Slug (Me) and his nephew, Timmy the Wonder slug.

Jimmy and his pet rock sparky are the main characters in a magazine me and a friend made called DR&S (Dumb redundant and stupid.)

I have my own language, with most of the characters being greek or phoenician (and some tokienish, futharkish) that I can write and read in as fast as or faster than English....I want to incorporate it into a book but don't have a book yet...I write well but I don't have a plot that is good enough....

Ugh! I'm now writing a reality-based spy-novel. I hate leaving stories half-written.

*Strokes beard in contemplation* Seems this is a viable market... *Laughs deep and Foul-like*

I'll tell you people what: you pay the Despiser some White Gold and he'll construct a fresh and exciting plane of existence to base your fictional stories and kooky character names in! For a little extra, I’ll populate it... You name it: elves, dwarves...dare I say...drow? Industrial and commercial zoning of those bothersome, deep forest areas free of charge if you buy two alternate worlds, but the oilcloth map of your personal wonderland will still cost shipping and handling.

As usual I'm having currently n stories in various stages of completion and progressing extremely slowly because of the competition. Styles range from horror to humor within either the fantasy, science fiction, or science fantasy genre. I have some very good ideas and plot lines but unfortunately I'm not a very good writer. However I think I'm a pretty good judge of writing and therefore am able to slowly and painfully trudge my way towards my goal writing something good.

I've also written some poems. Some of those I can actually stand.

I've done maps for two of my stories. One is a huge science fantasy epic which suffers currently from the problem that although I have thought up lots of fine background detail I don't know where my plot is going. I know how to stir up a huge war but I don't know what to do with it. I did a map for that story that showed the bigger part of the relevant continent on the Earth-like planet. The other map is for a very dark science fantasy story about people at the dubious mercy of an evil sadistic rosebush groupmind with magical abilities. (This is actually a serious story influenced by The Wounded Land and I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, as well as some other stuff.)

I have done a chart of the characters and some other important details for an Akallabêth-influenced dark fantasy story about the rise and fall of a family line that gets in the beginning a mysterious artifact. I still have some details to think of because it is the kind of story which is all about details and how they repeat and change from generation to generation from very nice to distant but nice to self-centered to evil to very creepy.

When I was child I attempted designing a hyper-agglutinative (sp?) language in which every sentence was one word. I tired of it soon.

Obviously the vast majority of folks on this messageboard are fantasy fans ... well you'd want to think so!

Who's ever tried to write their own fantasy novel?
Who's ever tried to event their own language, or at least character set?
Who's ever mapped out a fake land or city?
Who's drawn up a timeline of mediaeval events or genealogy of some non-existent royal family or race?

(my answer to these questions will be withheld until I find out how humiliated I am likely to be)
The new guy is here to resurrect old topics once more.

The answer to this one is, yes i did. Back in the late '80s, when i was 18 years old, fresh out of school and thought i knew more than i did (sigh). 600+ pages first draft, hand written. Never quite got round to completing the second draft - was putting it onto computer, which then got nicked...and i hadnt backed up. Demoralising experience...

Can't say i went in for all the created languages - only one non human race, and avoided anything to with elves, dwarves, dragons or any of the other 'traditional' fantasy content. Just concentrated on making my characters as 'real' as i could, and tried to tell a story i thought people would want to to read. Plotwise, i thought it was pretty good, though on reflection i could see that style wise it sucked (being brutally honest). But then, i was only a lad.

And though nothing came of my efforts (at this moment in time anyway - might as well be optimistic), i still feel a sense of achievement for what i did accomplish. I still have it in the same shoebox i stored it in all those years ago. Keep telling myself one day i'll get round to working on it again.

I do have one other completed work, just a short story that at about 18 pages was a bit too long too be published (at least thats what the fella at Interzone told me when i sent it in one time...though he did encourage me to send in other stuff). Never got round to doing more though.

Yes, to almost all of those when I was in 5th grade.

Been working on my own world for three years now; I have several maps of the most populated continent, as well as some cities and several regional maps, I have a detailed, 36.000-year-long timeline, I have lots of races, lots of cultures, lots of weird traditions and customs to go along with the cultures, many pantheons (each with its own spin) and dozens and dozens of plot hooks woven into the very structure of the world. I've set several of my latest stories into this world: the Ghostblood story I'm writing, which you can find in the Hall of Gifts, is also set in this world.

I once wrote a short for an anthology, and it was accepted, but it was never published.
Dandelion don't tell no lies
Dandelion will make you wise
Tell me if she laughs or cries
Blow away dandelion

I'm afraid there's no denying
I'm just a dandelion
a fate I don't deserve.
