Dragonsdawn is in the very beginning when the dragonets are being made into the bigger dragons. It gives a lot of info on the dragons themselves.

A Dragonlovers Guide To Pern is somewhat like a big reference book to all the happenings of Pern. It's shows a lot of things that we humans could only imagine. (Dragons fighting thread, the different clothing styles of the Weyrs...)

You really should start with the first trilogy:

Dragonflight, Dragonquest and The White Dragon

And then you can continue with
Dragonsinger
Dragonsong
Dragondrums

Which is the second trilogy, I think. After that I have lost track.

Dragonsdawn has a much stronger science fiction feel to it than the rest of the books. It tells the story of the origianl colony ships arriving at Pern, and how they had to genetically engineer some of the native life forms to protect them from the Thread. It is pretty far away from the others in time...a lot of the other Pern books go together in clusters, but it is sort of by itself...

After reading 40 or so pages of Dragonflight I find that I'm having difficulty sticking with the book. McCaffrey uses so many proper names in the first chapter that I really have only the vaguest notion of who is saying what about whom and with what and so on. I've made fun of young writers that flavor their stories with far less obscurity than I've read in Dragonflight but these books come highly recommended and I get the feeling that by the time I've plunged through the next few chapters the feeling that I am unwelcome in McCaffrey's world will subside.

Aww, you're just mad because nobody was pointlessly, brutally murdered in the first 40 pages.....

It was reported that a tyrant, when taking over a whole province, murdered all of the men, women and children of a particular ruling bloodline. Does that count?

You're speaking, of course, of Fax.

Yes Fax. And good riddance. :D

Now 150 pages into the book I have a pretty good grasp of what is going on and I am enjoying the book much more than I did at the beginning. :D
