Future of DVD

Ok, some of the hardcore Simpsons fans might remember this, but I forget the exact episode, but Homer is going down to the dump, and as he walks by the dump, there is a fence and a sign that says 8-Track, and a bunch of 8 Track's are Burning in a pile, then right next to it, VHS and under neath the sign, a bunch of VHS burning in a pile, and then there is a sign that says "Reserved for DVD" and its empth underneath.

Question is do you think this is a pretty accurate prediction of where DVD is heading, whats the next big thing, is this just another fad. I mean most people by now have done away with their VHS, and/or its rotting in a box in the garage or some such thing. I have 200+ DVDs, but is this all just a waste. What are your thoughts on teh next big video transfer style system. Cheers.

I believe each household will have multi function appliance that will provide video on demand, internet access and high fidelity music. Imagine a 100 terabyte virtual storage drive filled with movies, television, music and software. Dvds are destined to become as obsolete as 8-track tapes if the application of information becomes such that an independent storage disk is unnecessary. These kinds of systems are already possible. Only the high price tag makes access difficult at present.

The next disc media holds 25 gig of info. It utilizes multi-layered discs and blue and green lasers. I read about it 3 or 4 years ago. I think it's called Flouresent Multi-layered Disk or FMD. The article I read was in popular mechanics.

DVDs will be replaced by HD-DVDs which bumps the resolution from 480 to 1080. Those of you with HDTV know the difference this makes in picture quality.

I've seen it and while not the same jump as going from tapes/cable to DVD there is a definite improvement in picture quality.

HD-DVDs will probably begin to show up within the next 5 years.
