Actually, it's appropriate and funny that you bring up a movie about a post-apocalyptic future in a thread about possible environmental collapse. Looking forward to the remake, but who can replace the goddess that is Jenny Agutter?
Thanks for the article, Murrin. I can only hope global warming can be reversed for the sake of future generations of life on the planet. The current situation of indecision and rhetoric over climate change is frustrating, but sadly understandable. Living in denial is a very human thing to do, and I'm no different. All you want to do is live your life, do your thing, and hope you can exit the stage before the crap hits the fan.
I think Darth's joke hits the mark. Nothing like a little dark humor from our resident Sith Lord. But let me tell ya, Darth, I'll be gone before you, so you'll be dealing with the crap more than me. Ha ha!

This passage from the dust storm article sure got my attention:
"And more worrying consequences may lie ahead – despite tree-planting and other control measures, dust storms continue to churn from deserts in the north of China, including the Lupnor nuclear test site, potentially carrying radioactive particles across Beijing and beyond."
Oh joy.
So...we master the power of the atom through nuclear testing, but we end up being poisoned by the detritus of our own experiments. It illustrates again how little we understand the impact of our activities on the environment--until it's after the fact. Human technology is a wonderful thing, but we can't seem to apply it without damaging the world around us in some way. I wonder if we will ever make it to a Star Trek-like Utopian future where there is harmony between nature and high technology. That would seem to require some kind of paradigm shift in the conduct of human affairs first. Okaaay, enough blathering from me...

Technology Already Exists To Stabilize Global Warming
Existing technologies could stop the escalation of global warming for 50 years and work on implementing them can begin immediately, according to an analysis by Princeton University scientists.

"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Yes, good point. I like your taste; Jenny Agutter remains in my view one of the most beautiful women ever. She still looks good.Matrixman wrote:Actually, it's appropriate and funny that you bring up a movie about a post-apocalyptic future in a thread about possible environmental collapse. Syl - I have heard about some new developments to counteract global warming. My only concern is that if it released many companies will say that it's now okay to cut down forests. No good.
