Runes of the Earth. US edition published before the UK one!

Post by stuartfanning »

If the Amazon sites in the US and UK are to be believed. The US edition of Runes of the Earth will be published on October 14 and the British edition on October 21. Why? I expected both would be published on the same day. Did Stephen Donaldson insist that the American edition be published first?

I don't think Donaldson would have much say in the matter.

Yea, that would be the publishers’ call. But, I hate when they do that. They do it for movies, music and books. It just stinks all around.

Anyway, I would try ordering it online. If your from the UK you should find a distributor from the US, that will ship to the US. I know that Amazon.co.uk ships to the US (as I’ve ordered at least 10 times from Amazon.co.uk), I just don’t know if Amazon.com ships to the UK.

Anyway, when I ship from Amazon.co.uk I usually will get the item in about 3 days. Pretty fast.

Happens all the time. The British editions of George R. R. Martin's books and Robin Hobb's books usually come out long before the American versions, and they are both American writers...

It all seems to depend on how busy the various printing houses are in the various countries.

We Americans had better be pretty careful with our spoilers for a few weeks.

David Eddings is another American author whose books come out first in the UK, so I guess what's happening with Runes of the Earth re-dresses the balance a bit.

Julian May publishes first in the UK, too.

I seem to remember SRD saying that normally the gap between US publication and UK publication is more a matter of months than days, whichever one goes first. During that time the publishers across the pond are assessing the book's performance, deciding if they want to go through with it publication, and -- presumably, my addition -- adjusting their marketing campaigns according to what they see.

This very short gap is an expression of confidence on the part of Orion, the UK publishers.

Luckily in this case it's only a week, I don't mind waiting another week.

I expect I'll wait longer than that anyway, so no problem. It's more annoying when it happens with films though.

I already have it. :P

But I think its a wee bit unfair...

Then again, SRD is a lot more popular in America I think. :)

Is he? I think that's debatable.
