Efforts are being made to establish a new competition to encourage development of new technologies leading to the construction of working space elevators.

A problem I can see with this is that with the Ansari X-Prize we'll be left with two different ways of getting to space - because the X-Prize came first, all the teams have made craft that are designed to move from the ground into orbit - successful development of space elevators will make it more efficient to use the elevators to reach orbit than to use these craft.
