Well, my family and I were extremely lucky. Though we weathered very high winds and lots of rain, we managed to get though the storm just fine. Now we have to keep an eye on Ivan and hope Florida can avoid the hat trick. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who suffered during and after the hurricane. This time of year florida can be a troublesome place to live.

We came home last night, and our house is in good condition, with no flooding or any damage that I can see. The power was out for a while, but it was restored by the time we came home.
Hope Ivan stays away.
Hope Ivan stays away.

Hey, a lot of people enjoy hurricanes. There are reasons to like them.
Free days off.
Something exciting in life.
Really good surfing.
Your state is the focus of the nation and it isn't regarding voting.
A chance to get to know people better (the shelters are pretty open)
If you don't like stuff in the house, just don't buy plywood. The government will pay for it all. New TV, new beds, new clothes, everything.
Usually only old people die.
It's unpredictable, so you don't know until the day or so before if it's really gonna nail you good or not. Makes for a lot of anticipation.
The cat finally gets to go somewhere.
When you get home, at least there will be something different to do rather than just watching TV.
Hey, at least you have time to prepare, this ain't no earthquake you know.
Look at it this way, it's got to be some kind of record! Right? That's good.
At least birds won't care very much.

Looks to be a direct thrust up into Florida. Wow! 3 in a month's time. They should be impressed. I bet they have a lot of photo opportunities. Well at least that plywood won't go to waste. I bet all the smart people just kept it up, knowing what was going to happen.
Man, people in Florida seem to get all the summer weekends off! It's just not fair!!

.
My favorite part of this image is "Do not use for planning purposes." LOL!, it's coming right for us, but hey, it says don't listen to us we're just rolling the dice and have no clue at all. WTH? Take responsibility or don't advertise. Sheesh! What a bunch of pansies. Oh well, hopefully the media will try to do something stupid this time & one of them will get blown down a street from the 160 mph winds, or a wave will take him out to sea as he tries to continue to report the hurricane. Meanwhile, the intelligent people of Florida are either out of the state or in reinforced structures specified to be used as shelters.

You wanna see my problem with people. It's right here....
www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5927015/
An elderly lady braves the storm to try to save her cat. WHAT? Okay, that one is just plain stupid, but the other thing is worse. The other thing... man.
So it's headed for Jamica and Cuba. Right now everyone is scared, but after it passes, just like in Grenada, people will start looting from each other and from businesses. A storm of great power is about to crush them and kill a lot of people, and the very same hour that the storms pass off to the north, people will take to the streets to capitilize on the damage.
I remember this apartment complex I lived at and they evicted some guy, dragging out all his stuff onto the lawn. All of his neighbors came out like scavengers and started drinking beer and playing music while they ransacked his stuff. I took nothing. I went to look at the people. I went to look at the real horror. It was sad that this man got kicked out. It's sad when someone dies unless they're just plain stupid like that old woman looking for her cat, what an idiot. I can't feel sorry for someone that incredibly blind to the power of a Cat5 hurricane. But its the people like the pregnant woman crushed by a tree that is sad. And you can bet that if she had nice shoes, and one of the looters were there, they'd put their foot up to hers to see if it was a match.
You're thinking I'm not a nice person because a powerful hurricane is coming. These people are wearing masks. They'll come out armed and try to take everything they can possibly get their hands on. That's the real horror. The hurricane is simply a force of nature. It isn't doing anything on purpose. It just is. A coincidence. The way things work. A storm. The really scary thing is that some people will be murdered because they have a nice ring or watch they don't want to give up to someone with a knife running around after the storm spreading a more personal type of destruction.
The funny thing. The really funny thing. And not haha as in a good joke. No the funny thing is that if it were worse, like a nuclear bomb, and food got scarce, and everything was upside down, the funny thing is that most of you here would act the same way. Just like the soccer team in the Andes that ended up eating the dead. Just like a destitute mother living in poverty that dumps a newborn child in a garbage can at McDonalds. Almost every single one of you would do some terrible things just to survive. You'd sell your children into sex slavery just like the Russians had to do just to survive in the post-Wall era. Or you might sell your wife off for a little sex to pay the rent or pay for some groceries. Or you might lay in wait for someone that has a nice car, a car you could sell to some people you know about, some people you would never have known about otherwise. Or you might stab some couple and hoped that they both died because dead people don't talk about money stolen from them. The funny thing is that most people can't control themselves when they are tested to the extreme. They'd like to think they could, but they can't. They become like everyone and everything they were busy preaching about all their lives as being evil or bad.
And then, if they're caught, they'll beg and plead for their lives or their freedom, just like those people that they see on television and think or say, "I hope that person gets the death penalty". But when it's you and when things are desperate, oh then it's a whole different matter isn't it? Almost everyone here would do some or all of these things.
And you think I'm so different from you. Yeah, well maybe I am different, the difference is that I already know I would do many of these things. The difference between me and you is that I already understand how terrible people can be. You think that you're good. You aren't good. You just have enough self-control to prevent yourself from doing some of the things you really wouldn't mind doing if there wasn't a law against it. If stealing was acceptable, you would. I bet some of the women here have had abortions or personally know someone that has. That person(s) probably thinks of themselves as a good person. If killing were legal as long as you had a reason, many of the men here would have killed someone because they made them mad. If you put people into a place where things are desperate, where food is scarce, it's Lord of the Flies, and people start making bad decisions. The tragedy isn't this storm, it's the storm that comes afterward. It's the mirror of our dreams. It's what's inside when you take off the mask of polite society. It's us!

...waiting for the Cat 5 s***storm that's coming. Here at Forestal Weather, we predict it will hit somewhere in the Zefalefelah region. Expect moderate to heavy post flooding and some flame damage. Moderators will most likely order an evacuation of the post until the winds die down.
And yeah, if I was starving and somebody was already dead, I'd probably go Wendigo. If my son was starving, there's no way of telling what I would do. I do think (and really that's all I can say, despite the many hours of introspection) that I would resist harming others for my own personal gain, however.
No, Zef, I'm not thinking you're a nice person, but there are more important qualities than being "nice" (whatever the heck that really means). It's an interesting outlook you have on the nature of humanity. I even share parts of it.You're thinking I'm not a nice person...

I highly doubt many, if any, members on the Watch would ever think of doing anything like that. When you celebrate my friends, MsMary, Foam, Tom C and dAN's homes being destroyed and families being endangered (not to mention my sister in law and her husband) you really piss me off. And the picture you paint of humanity combined with Darth's seriously negative views on altruism (wheter he's being cynical or not) make me afraid to read another recent posting on this board.

Yeah, aren't we lucky, we get to spend another weekend sitting in our homes (or evacuation sites) watching the hurricane coverage and the rain and wind outside - hoping our homes and communities will survive without any damage.ZefaLefeLaH wrote:Looks to be a direct thrust up into Florida. You must live in a dream world. Yeah, right, we all get enough time off from work to not only prepare our homes for the hurricanes, but also buy a plane ticket out of here (assuming any tickets are available during the approach of a major storm). And we all have enough money to pull this off each time a storm threatens.lMy favorite part of this image is "Do not use for planning purposes." Just for the record, the winds of hurricane Ivan in Grenada were strong enough to destroy concrete houses, according to today's news.

Mary....let Zef rave. It can't hurt us. He has been banned before, and by the fact that he's back, it proves we mean more to him that he wants us to know. So, let's focus on keeping ourselves safe, because nobody here wants any of us hurt, including Zef. He probably thinks we're just stupid not to run. So, allow me to answer that a bit. I am a Florida native, 40 years old. There has never been a year like this one, and it does seem almost comical in it's scope. Two category 5 hurricanes hit us, with a third one on the way, and all this before most hurricane seasons start cranking up. And maybe that's it. Later in the year, when the water is cooler, and the fronts are coming, hurricanes are usually weaker, and either miss to the left, opting for Texas, or they go to the right, opting for Georgia, or the Carolinas. So, I expect that after this season is past, it will be some time before we have to do this again. Which is why I am not running, and why though I am afraid a bit, I am not letting it run my life. Zef, I forget where your from, but if I remember correctly, you might be prone to getting blizzards....I'll take the hurricanes, thanks very much.

As far as this hurricane goes, I would prefer to be in the path. I think it would be exciting. It would be really scary, but it would be something more to do than go home watch TV, get on the net, play a video game, drink some beer, enjoy the wife, play with the cat, watch more TV, go to sleep, get up, go to work, every day. Steak, cheeseburger, hotdog, pork, chicken, rinse & repeat. It would be at least interesting.danlo wrote:I highly doubt many, if any, members on the Watch would ever think of doing anything like that. As far as the people of the Watch not doing anything like that… You don’t think they would huh? That’s because you lack the ability to imagine that situation at all. Place any member of the watch in a desperate situation and they will react desperately. I’m not saying that a person would turn to crime for the enjoyment of it. I’m saying that they’ll turn to crime because they think they have no choice. But there are always choices. There’s a choice to die with dignity, but almost no one here would make that choice.
How do you think people come to these choices? Do you truly believe that they think of themselves as bad people? Not at all, it’s more the mob-mentality, the clique of present, the way it appears to be with everyone else, keeping up with the Jones. You’re starving and you hear the Jim & Susan sold their daughter into sex slavery. Well, to me crude, that’s one less mouth to feed. Plus they got paid in some manner to boot. It might seem harsh, but when you are used to one way of life & it changes, you change. So you hear that Bob & Lori sold their daughter too. And John & Sally. And Rich & Ann. Etc. etc. etc. All these people still go to church each Sunday. They don’t think that they are evil people. They hurt because of it. But they’re alive.
And you have the gall to say that you would do different!? What makes you so high & mighty? I would eat my pets to stay alive. I would probably kill & I know I would steal. But you act like you would just lay down and die and never hurt anyone or do anything wrong while the world around you just turned into sh#*. I don’t think you’re brave, I think you’re either stupid or you’re just flat out lying, either to me, to yourself, or to everyone here so you look better for it.

When I wrote: I highly doubt many, if any, members on the Watch would ever think of doing anything like that.
I was refering to taking the evictees possesions or donning masks to loot during and after a hurricane--
I obviously didn't read far enough into your post to really understand what you were saying about possible survival scenarios...no the rest of what you say could makes perfect sense. I prefer not to think about it-I'll deal with it when it happens. I not going to say I'll become a saint or kill and steal everything in sight. I not going to say it's not possible-however it is, really, a whole different topic. So I apologize for making you think I was making a "blanket statement" re: your entire post. I was very busy at work with 20 students and didn't pay enough attention.
I'm not going to apologize for the hurricane part--obviously I don't share your morbid sense of humor at other's expence. I don't think I'm better than any one, I might have been distracted but I'm not stupid and I didn't use a curse word with you. I have fought to stay one inch off the street for longer than you can imagine--I have seriously starved--and have thrown bodies around to secure my piece of dirt and to prevent them from killing me. But I have never throw a punch in my life or ripped anyone off.
Prehaps I could do a little btter than others since I have some experience in raw survival-but I prefer other possible futures. If I want to bum myself out I can do it on my own. Yes I've thought about all those situations before--no one can predict the future or how anyone might behave in the future given certian circumstances.
