Who are your Favorite Female Vocalists?

Post by Brinn »

There's nothing I enjoy more than a female vocalist with a distinctive/beautiful/strong voice. The topic on Tori Amos prompted me to create this post. Who are your favorites and why? I'll throw out a few of mine...

Siouxsie Sioux of Siouxsie and the Banshees - Power, beauty and versatility.

Tanya Donnely(Sp?) formerly of Belly - A vulnerable little girl lost voice with lyrics that are anything but.

Sinead O'Connor - Range, range, range...

Sarah McLachlan - Simply Angelic.

Lisa Gerrard formerly of Dead can Dance - Little known and underexposed. A voice powerful enough for opera yet hauntingly melodic at turns.
War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. Sarah M., as you said.
another Canadian singer named Loreena McKennit.
a lot of the old jazz stars such as Ella Fitzgerald -- I could listen to them all day and be very happy! :D

Loreena McKennit of "The Mummers Dance" fame? That's an excellent song...her voice has a very ethereal quality. Nice choices!

I'd have to go for Beth Orton, who carries an incredible amount of emotion in her voice, the funkier-than-thou Róisin Murphy of Moloko and the saccarin-sweet Sarah Cracknell of Saint Etienne

Annie Lennox!! A powerful, lustrous voice that can do anything! Her partnership with Dave Stewart in The Eurythmics produced some of the best songs of the 80's.

Kirstie MacColl was another favorite with a rich, evocative voice. She was underappreciated by the popular media of her time, and was virtually unknown to North American audiences. Sadly, she died in a senseless accident in 2000. At least I have her CDs, so her great voice lives on, in my home at the very least.

I must also mention Loreena McKennitt, not just because she is a fellow Canadian. :D Her album, The Mask & Mirror, had a profound effect on me, and remains one of my favorite works of music of any genre.

Only female vocalist I'm familiar with is Clare Torry. If anybody can name the exact track that I know her vocals from, I'll give 'em 100,000 WGD.

I always thought she could use her voice like a synthesizer.
