Let's get SRD to do an eSigning

Post by Ellester »

Hi, yesterday I emailed The Signed Page and asked if they could get Stephen R. Donaldson to do an esigning. This is a site that specializes in book signing (SF and Fantasy).

www.signedpage.com

This is one of the best services that are out there for people who love books. I personally have bought the new Terry Brooks, the new Salvatore and the new Keyes (amazing author, btw) books all signed for the same price as a new book (without the 20% discount you get for new books at most retailers).

I noticed on the signing tour thread on this forum that an email was sent out that he has no plans of visiting Canada. I am from the US, but I don’t live in a large metropolis so I doubt he’s coming to my home. By getting Donaldson to do an esigning then all of his fans get a chance of getting a signed book (I believe they do up to 300 signed books, less if the demand's less). Basically anyone who can access the net can get a signed book.

Anyway, I got a reply back from Shawn at The Signed Page saying they tried extremely hard to get him to do an esigning (it’s obvious they are fans), but he refused saying he’s doing too many signings in October/November. The one thing Shawn said was maybe we could try an convince him to do an esigning during the Holidays. I would assume that means December.

I know some here on Kevin’s Watch have contact with SRD (I think?) and I was hoping if anyone (or everyone) could send some emails or letters to SRD asking if he would reconsider, so us fans who won’t get a tour stop can still get a signed copy. Or maybe a petition? Heck anything to get SRD to reconsider.

I read the last series when it came out back in the early 80’s and I’ve been waiting 20 years for him to finally come back to this series, it would really mean a lot if I could get a signed copy of the new book. Wait, I want to emphasize that, it would be HUGE! if I could get a signed book by one of my favorite authors from one of my favorite series.

Anyway, I thought I would post and see if anyone is interested in pursuing this.

LAST NOTE, THIS IS NOT TRYING TO DEMINE THE SIGNING TOUR SRD IS DOING. THIS IS JUST AN APPEAL TO HELP THE PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE IN THE U.S. OR NEAR THE CITIES SRD IS VISITING.

Hey, give it more than a day! danlo seems to be the guy to talk to about getting SRD to sign stuff. I just got my signed copy of "Gilden-Fire" the other day. I shipped it to Danlo, he got it signed, and shipped it back. I probably owe him a lunch now or something...... :D

I suppose most people are like me - they haven't responded because they don't know enough about esigning.

I'm willing to entertain anything--but I don't want to interupt his work schedule whatsoever. I am very reluctant to email him and distrurb him. Convince me or perhaps suggest it to him via the Gradual Interview medium.

Good grief, he's not appearing east of the frikkin' Continental Divide.

Unless Great Britian counts, that is.

Yea, I have no idea how long they have been doing it, but with the advent of the internet I would assume it’s something new in the last 5 years, if not the last year. I just found out about it on the Terry Brroks site, when he said he was doing an esigning. As far as i know this is his first time, as I have followed this author for years. I’m sure it’s pretty new to the authors and it will take a while for some authors to warm up to this idea.

R.A. Salvatore is releasing all his drizzt books in hardback, kinda as a collectors edition thing every 3 months. This will take about 4 years to release them all, and he’s said on his site he will do this for every book in that series. So, from his statement it sounds like he’s committed for 4 years to doing this.

Besides the authors I’ve mentioned, I missed out on Brian Herbert signing the new Dune book (kinda sad about that one), and I noticed another high profile guy Tad Williams is doing his new books on this site (but I don’t read his books).

But, then again Stephen King refuses to sign books anymore unless it’s a special event or occasion. So, not all are willing to sign books. But, he has a huge following whereas most of the fantasy or SF authors pale in comparison to the numbers that follow King.

I guess it just matters with the author, but it looks like this site is starting to gain some respectability with the authors in the SF/Fantasy genre

@dalno, yea hence my apprehension in my post. He’s already said no as he’s doing too many book signings with his tour. Honestly I don’t know how to approach SRD. Maybe just ask him what he thinks of the site “The Signed Page”. He knows about it as they’ve contacted him trying to get him to sign his new book.

Thanks for all who posted, I just posted because I thought it might garnish some interest and maybe SRD himself might see it and reconsider. I honestly didn’t think much would come of it. :)
