How many of us had a difficult time with the Wounded Land when the second chrons first came out? I did. People still complain about Linden Avery and SRD's treatment of the Land in that book verses the beauty of the land in the first chrons. But, we all now have a great love of the WHOLE story, first & second chrons together, don't we? I do. Thats why I have no doubt I'm gonna love the third chrons & probly hate Roger (based on the prologue).
BTW Darth, how could The Return of the King be a let down for you???
Aragorn brings the dead back to fight, Frodo & Sam struggle thru Mordor to single handedly bring down Sauron.....then the Hobbits go back to the Shire & kick Sauruman & Grimma's collective arses.....a GREAT book, magnificently written!!

I'm glad you came to your senses, Darth....
One of my prized book possesions is a hardcover, slip case edition of The Lord of The Rings, so the last 4 or 5 times I've read it, it has really been in the form of one long book, so the ROTK (or FOTR or TTT) don't really stand out as seperate books for me any more....which, I guess is what I was saying about the chrons - I look at them as a whole, not as seperate parts. And as a whole, I'm sure SRD will not dissapoint!

If I recall correctly, Tolkien didn't actually want LOTR split into separate books; the publisher did it to prevent the book from being HUGE.

Yep. Tolkien was actually quite snippy about it:W.B. wrote:If I recall correctly, Tolkien didn't actually want LOTR split into separate books; the publisher did it to prevent the book from being HUGE.
I recall that Tolkien never much liked the individual volume titles either, especially The Two Towers. Maybe he should have called it 'EMYN MUIL to ORTHANC'.J.R.R. Tolkien wrote:A work of great length can, of course, be divided up artificially into more handy bulks: the sort of process that produced sections of the big Oxford Dictionary labelled 'ONOMASTICAL — OUTING' and 'SIMPLE to SLEEP'.

Of course, nowadays it's a feature, not a bug. Even if it were possible to bind all 50 million pages of The Wheel of Time in one set of covers, the publishers wouldn't do it. By making it into a whole shelf of separate books, they can charge you thirty bucks for each one.

I was all set to buy these books, But then I read Revan's post telling me to not get my hopes up. Bummer. I guess I'll just order the latest 27 books in the Xanth trilogy instead......

Lord Revan makes a good point (really he does) and I abide by it.
As for Murrin's recommendation to re-read the books right before Runes: yessir, that's what we're doing in Dissection.

I'm unsure as to how much I will be able to like these books. I find it hard to think that I'll not get to see the Land through Covenant's eyes - it'll be strange, I liked Covenant a lot - rereading LFB has really reminded me what an amazing PoV character he is, so now I don't know what to expect from Runes.

Probably the only thing I will be griping about will be waiting for the next book to come out....
