You don't have to do a top five, of course, but I'm a top 5 nut, as I've said many times (or at least once)

1. Stanley Kubrick
2. Akira Kurosawa
3. Francis Ford Coppolla
4. Sergio Leone
5. Martin Scorsese

Michael Mann

Martin Scorcese

Steven Spielberg
War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. I'm taking this topic and running away with it...

Favorite directors (fav films by them in parentheses):

Stanley Kubrick (2001: A Space Odyssey)
Steven Spielberg (Jurassic Park)
James Cameron (Terminator 2)
Ridley Scott (Blade Runner)
Woody Allen (Husbands & Wives)
Quentin Tarantino (Kill Bill, Vols. 1 & 2)
Peter Jackson (Fellowship of the Ring)
Ingmar Bergman (The Seventh Seal)
Michael Mann (Heat)
Bernardo Bertolucci (Little Buddha)
Robert Wise (Star Trek: The Motion Picture)

Favorite actor-directors:

Clint Eastwood (Unforgiven)
Jodie Foster (Little Man Tate)
Robert Redford (Ordinary People)
Mel Gibson (Braveheart)
Kenneth Branagh (Henry V)

Most uneven director:

Terry Gilliam -- he's either brilliant (Brazil) or boring (Adventures of Baron Munchhausen). Inspired (Life of Brian) or tired (The Fisher King).

Most exasperating director :

Paul Thomas Anderson -- who is this man and why did he squander away two hours of my life with Magnolia?

Former favorite directors that have cooled down:

Francis Coppola -- does anyone really care about any film he has done after Apocalypse Now?

Ivan Reitman -- the guy who gave us Stripes, Ghostbusters, and Dave. He's now doing a TV series called "Cooking Lessons." Whoopee.

"Most improved" director:

Tim Burton -- the Batman movies were dull and inept. Then he came out with Sleepy Hollow, one of the best and best-looking movies of the '90s.

Good picks.

Oh, and you think you can run away with threads? Observe.

 Yeah, yeah, yeah. What about Boogie Nights? Punch Drunk Love?

Planet. of. the. Apes.:hairs:

Kidding aside. I do agree Sleepy Hollow was better than the Batman fiascos, but I also think he hasn't topped Ed Wood. Or Edward Scisorhands. Or Beetle Juice. Or The Nightmare Before Christmas, if you count writing and co-producing. Come to think of it, Burton's Batman fiascos are masterpieces compared to . . . yes, Joel Schumacher's!

I actually liked Batman Forever much better than the first two films. It's just that Schumacher then went totally cuckoo with Batman & Robin.

Planet of the Apes...okay, you got me there. I had blocked it out of my mind. Gee, wonder why.

I didn't see Ed Wood. Batman turned me off Burton so much that I avoided his films for years, until friends took me to see Sleepy Hollow.

I have not seen Anderson's other films. If there are dirt cheap VHS versions of them in bargain bins, I may check them out. (Yes, I'm strange.)

OMG! How could I forget Zhang Yimou!

I've even met the man, and I've loved his movies for a long time (but haven't seen "Hero" yet).

Actually, I should probably add Stephen Herek (Adventures in Babysitting, Mr. Holland's Opus, Bill and Ted's Excellent adventure, etc.) since he's Sammi's dad (one of our young prodigy actresses) and supports us, and wants to make our version of Plan 9 into a movie, and gave us a really schweet donation! :2c: :D :D :D

Yeah, I really like that guy..... ;)
