The Ending... Was that really...

I could be WAAAY off on this, but as I read the last bit of Runes with Covenant showing up, it felt the same as The Illearth War. There are 2 stories going on in that book, and after Mhoram and Troy get to the end there's a big explosion and then Bannor and Covenant show up floating down a river. At that point the book goes back in time to show how Covenant and Bannor end up in that river and what the deal is with that explosion.
So, this could be the same deal. The next book could be about Covenant's adventure to get Jeremiah to Linden, or Jeremiah's adventure to get Covenant to Linden. The big reason I'm not sure about this theory is all the cryptic "Find Me", "I'm Dead" stuff from Covenant.

Hey....ehat happened at the Co-op? You still employed?

I want to hear some "Hellfires" myself, but I won't stop reading it if TC is nothing but a shade. The entire mythology of the Land is what I fell in love with, not just TC, and there's just soooooo much wonderful material there to mine.

This occurred to me too. How can we miss TC being brought back and Jeremiah coming out of his cocoon and escaping from Lord Foul?bozeman wrote:I could be WAAAY off on this, but as I read the last bit of Runes with Covenant showing up, it felt the same as The Illearth War. Ok, more random thoughts floating around here...
I remember reading somewhere else on this forum that SRD mentions "We will go back before the Lords, back before the Old Lords, the whole history of the Land will become relevant to the present." What if they (meaning TC and LA) have something they need to do in the past? And remember that legend about Covenant in the first place? "Berek Halfhand reborn"?
So here's my thought: Berek = Covenant???

I have always had two arguments against Covenant actually being Berek:
1) We know Berek lost his two fingers in battle, so Covenant would have to regain his fingers, then have them chopped off again.
2) We see Berek's ghost at the end of The Power That Preserves, and I'm sure Covenant would have noticed if the ghost was a spitting image of him; so Covenant would have to travel back in time, regain his fingers, lose them again in battle, and change his facial features beyond recognition
Still, I wouldn't put any kind of narrative wrangling past SRD.

Ahem. Wow, this is fun!
Is it really Covenant?
yes, and, no.
find me
remember, I'm dead.
This however, she knows assuredly. Be cautious of love. It misleads. There is a glamour upon it which binds the heart to destruction.
These three things provide so much insight.
Jeremiah, broken beyond mending by the ravages of Foul's bonfire, now in the hands of Foul himself. Would not Foul give him back to Linden seemingly mended only to destroy her at the end by breaking him again? Yes. He would. And would not Linden sacrifice EVERYTHING, including Thomas to keep him whole?? Yes, she would.
But, not only do we have Jeremiah in some other state other than "catatonic", but we have Covenant returning as well. Is it really him? Yes and no. Remember what Covenant became at the end of WGW. He became the PROTECTOR the KEYSTONE of the Arch of Time. Time itself is being corrupted. Time itself it being used BY corruption. Who is the keystone?? Covenant. Is he "fatal" to Time. Yes. Think about this. If Covenant fails...Time fails. If wild magic is unleashed and Covenant is not there to protect the Arch, existance as the Land knows it will cease. All will be lost.
something is protecting the Arch of Time
Well, there you go. But he's being attacked. He's being attacked by Foul's tool. Joan. Time is being corrupted. So, yes...it is really Covenant. Is he "alive", in a manner of speaking, yes. Is he "dead", in a manner of speaking, yes. Is it HIM, yes. "The eye of the paradox" "You are the white gold". Do I know how the heck he got there....Nope. Have to wait until Revanant to find out that little detail.
beware the halfhand

Which fingers did Berek have cut off? For some reason I have this image in my head that he lost his forefinger and middle finger, not the last two fingers - in other words, that his loss was more like Jeremiah's than TC's. I looked through LFB last night but didn't notice anything in my skimming.

I always thought it was the last two fingers. I seem to remember Atiaran saying something about when she told the story of Berek to Covenant in LFB. Don't have the book with me, tho. I shall look at it later today...burgs66 wrote:Which fingers did Berek have cut off?
