The Navy flew him out there to get to the new ship they've assigned him to -- just in time to come home with the boat!
And yes, Syl, you sound every bit as addicted as I!
This guy I know said that the US military pretty much rented half of Bahrain for some base or other. (Secret of course, but since all civilian traffic now have to take the long way around it is kind of difficult to miss it.)

Now I'm on the ship. Hi tech navy. I guess I'll be around a lot more than I thought.
Bahrain was alright. Glad I wasn't there for too long, though. The captain just told us last night that we can let everyone know we'll be home June 13, so I'll have a nice, short deployment.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”
