i've been having a pretty rotten week (this is the fourth day in a row one or the other of my kids has been home from school sick). But when they get better and I have more time, You betcha I'll be happy to talk about Mordant with you.

But right now, I have to make a quick run to the store for some more tylenol.

It's good to have a dedicated fan like you bring more attention to MN. In its own way, MN does indeed rule.

After doing recent chapter reads for both MN and WGW, I for one just need to take a breather for a while to recharge my energy. I'm certainly following the MN chapter discussions.

Oh no Darth's making threads again! Unfortunately it seems like most of the tried and true "Needers" seem to be very busy in real life: I'm transfering positions and battling the flu and sinus attacks today, Sky in very busy, Earthy and dAN have RL concerns, MsMary's still recovering from numerous hurricanes, Foamy's starting college, etc...

New members have been contributing and keeping things going lately, such as Gart, Myste and Matrixman. And even Torrent pops in from time to time...but it true, we seriously NEED all the new folks we can get-and we thank you for your concern, input and fire! (and then there's always Darth )

I'm 120 pages into a re read of MOHD. I expect to finish book one soon but I also expect Runes to interrupt my moving on to AMRT. I've avoided Mordant discussions because I hadn't read the books in over 10 years. I'm trying to catch up but its difficult. I just finished Dragonflight. I'm finishing The Gunslinger, I started The Man Who Killed His Brother and I began reading A Game of Thrones. Give me a little time and I'll be happy to converse about MN.

Mordant's Need was the first SRD I read, so in my mind, that’s still what I subconsciously associate with him. Therefore, it will always be special to me.

You have an uncommon perspective on SRD, Dreaming. From what I've read here at the Watch and at SRD's website, most people seemed to have first encountered his writing by way of either the Chronicles or the Gap books. For whatever reason, Mordant's Need tends not to be point of first contact. Maybe because few stores keep copies of MN in stock?

The reason I read Mordant's Need first is because I wasn't ready for Covenant at the time I read it. My Dad turned me off to the series by trying to get me to read it when I was 11. I hadn't even read Lord of the Rings yet! About a year later he handed me Mordant's need, and I loved it.

Does that mean It's a less "Mature" work? I don't think so. I just got caught up in the language of Covenant and wasn't comprehending enough of what I read. Also its hard for someone that age to identify with a rapist. (Note that things are different from here, seven years later) Terisa didn't start out that likeable, but at least I could keep with her until she gets cool. What is interesting are my different views on Lebbic between then and now.

Anyway, I am starved to talk about it, as I just accidentally demonstrated. Oh well.

I have always thought of MN as being SRD's most "human" work. It's not a titanic clash of good and evil that will control a galaxy like the Gap, or that will decide the fate of a world, as in the Chrons. It's on a smaller scale, and he takes the time to really let us see Terisa's growth as a human being one little bit at a time, chapter by chapter.

Another thing that it interesting is that the bad guys actually want to go back to what is the status quo, and the good guys are dreamers, who are trying to preserve the huge changes that took place in Mordant one generation ago, and perhaps expand those postive changes to the two neighboring countries. In this place, the normal condition is to be in a warlike mess with rogue magic users adding to the chaos (to be a peasant there must suck beyond words, eh?) The dreamers want something better, something more -- and something for everyone, not only the elites.

In addition, there are interesting points to consider when you compare and contrast Terisa's growth as a human being, with the roles of women in the society of Mordant.

Hmm, Chapter by Chapter dissection is not really my thing. I just like to talk about general aspects of literature and all art. A methodical grinding discussion Just seems like a way to take the fun out of Reading.

I agree with what you say about dissecting, The Dreaming. I don't even re-read SRD's books that often (I've only read the Chronicles once).

Maybe it is a little difficult to find new topics for the Mordant's Need (general) discussion, because the MN universe is more limited compared to the Land.

And besides, RUNES has just been published.

I tend to focus more on the Augury, partly because I mod there, and partly because I tend to go deeply into left field with my opinions...... Also, I liked Teresa from page 1, and cannot stand to read what you people sometimes say about her.

I'm a big fan of both--I like the Augury because I sometimes feel like I've reread MN so many times, looking closely at each section opens up new ideas about the books for me. I love getting everyone else's pov on this stuff! And I enjoy the discussions in the general MN forum because it's a good place to go off on tangential things--like danlo's thread about the world of Mordant's geography and culture.

I read MN first, too, Dreaming, and then Daughter of Regals--I read the Chrons only when I realized I had to get more of this SRD guy.

I haven't read MN or MRT since they were first published in the UK in paperback way back in the 80's. Re-reading the Chrons recently because I knew the Runes were coming I was suprised how much I had missed when I first read them. Now I've read Runes there's nothing else for me to do bu re-read MN. I can't have the next Covenant novel so I need hte next best thing. It's great to look on here and see what everyone is saying.

Yes, the Gap is a must - Of all SRD's work, it is surpassed only by the first chrons.

I love MN. When I had read the chrons round 84-85 I wanted more of this fantastic writer. Soon came MN and AMRT and I fell for them too of course, so totally different in tone and atmosphere, much smoother, calmer, more humane someonew said, and at the same time very tense and exciting, I couldn't stop reading; but even more of intrigue and psychology. In so many ways much different than the Chrons and that was so surprising at the time.

This is always now what I expects of SRD, always something new and unexpected; as is the case with Runes (who would have believed that...! ). MN is a totally flawless work of art and very entertaining...

But now Runes, LOTR and RL takes much of my time, therefore I seldom post at all right now...
