Yes, it was a goosebump moment reading that. A chilling thing for SRD to say. What it really means I don't know. But poor Elena. Her one "simple" mad act seems to translate into ever more dire consequences as time goes by.

Maybe it has something to do with whatever state Lord Foul is in? Perhaps it will somehow enable him to escape...that's my only theory (however vague).

An interesting line in the What has Gone Before prologue to Runes mentioned that Elena wasn't really sane, although no one could see it except Covenant. I'd never really thought of her like that before, but looking back it now seems like quite a profound statement.
Q. Why do Communists drink herbal tea?
A. Because proper tea is theft.

Poor Covenant, and his one act of unrestrained rage (which is the ultimate cause).

Interesting... Covenant is screwed because he did Lena and in so doing has royally screwed the Land...

Just think, the more we laugh about the irony of such events, the more Foul is laughing his a** off because everyone is playing into his hands.

Foul picks the time and the places....I'm sure he was aware of the 16 year old hottie walking by Kevins Watch, who just happened to be in love with the Legend of Berek Halfhand.

its interesting how Covenants very first act in the land has led to so many problems. If he hadnt done that one thing how differant would the land be?

His act was reprehensible. But ... would the Land have been better off without Elena? Hmmmm ... probably no Earthblood problem. No breaking of the Law of Death .... Hmmmm... As I recall in The Wounded Land it was said that the breaking of the Law of Death aided the Despiser in healing himself with earthpower.

So no rape, no Elena, no breaking of the Law of Death, one dead Despiser after the first Chronicles!!

I'd argue that we wouldn't have one dead Despiser. I don't think he can die, but that's just my opinion.

It would fit his previous statement that Thomas Covenant would destroy the universe.

Just my two White Gold Dollars worth.

It wad frae monie a blunder free us,
And foolish notion.

Hehe, that was my question. Not expecting it to be answered, especially not with a hugely revealing snippet. I seem to have stumbled upon something. (I asked the question before I joined the watch, that is my real name. Look at me trying to sound so smart.)

Certainly seems to give us a pretty big hint. That Law of Death certainly had a bunch of long term repercussions, so It's only natural that the Law of life have them too.

It is somewhat sad, and even startling, to realize that Hile Troy's actions as Caer-Caveral would be so fatal to the Land as Elena's... in that one way, perhaps he was right when he was attracted by her... :( Poor Caer-Caveral... even his selfless act of sacrifice looks like it will turn out to be a danger to the Land :(

Note also that the only reason Hile was summoned in the first place was because Atiaran wanted to get back at Covenant. It all goes back to Lena...

In a way it makes sense to me that these two characters -- of whom of all of the characters in the Chrons I would describe as blind -- would between them, well...mess things up.

They were, in life, both so convinced that their decisions were the right ones, and that there were no alternatives to their plans, that they were blind to the possible consequences of their actions, if indeed, their actions proved to be unwise...as, of course, the actions did.

Kevin Landwaster, of course, had the same problem. :(

The heartbreaking thing about both of them, is that they both truly loved the Land and wanted to do what they thought was best. Unfortunately, they both made some poor decisions, and did nearly as much to hurt the Land (breaking the Law of Death, losing the Staff of Law) and the Land's defenders (the slaughter of the Warward) as the Despiser did during the course of the First Chrons. :(
Love as thou wilt.

I believe that the utter distruction is the fact the TC can now be brought back from being the avatar of the arch of time. Once he is brought back to life he will no longer be able to protect the arch as he did in WGW.
This will bring about the earths distruction.
