My only wish

Post by Ossie »

As much as I'm psyched about the return to my all-time favourite series after 20 years, & the chance to get more out of SRD on the back history of the Land, the Lords, Lore etc, my only hope is that if this is truly intended to be the *last* chroncles, then it ends with more certainty than the first 2 trilogies. It was obviously intentional, but the climaxes of TPTP & WGW always left me feeling like the ends of the Nightmare on Elm Street movies: eventually another one comes out & you basically find out that oh, no, Freddie wasn't actually killed last time - you only weakened him for a while. Obviously in TPTP & WGW it was never intended to give the impression that Lord Foul was destroyed completely, & I suspect that may not even be the case again this time, but I really want final closure on the entire thing!!

Welcome to the Watch, Ossie. If you go to SRD's site and read what he has to say about the Last Chronicles, I think you'll be put at ease. It's pretty clear that SRD wants final closure on the whole thing too. Whereas the previous stories provided only temporary victories over Lord Foul, for the Last Chronicles SRD wants a "more enduring solution" to the problem of Despite. Also consider SRD's adamant stand that after he's done with the Last Chrons, there will be NO more Covenant stories. I tend to believe his words. :)

I agree with Matrixman - and besides, SRD's site is ripe with info, courtesy of the Gradual Interview :D By the way, the ending of TPTP was not meant to herald any subsequent Second Chronicles: SRD tells us that he had no intention to pursue the story or setting any further, but was forced to write the Second Chronicles through the insistence of Lester Del Rey... And thinking about it, the ending of the First Chronicles looks much more "final" than the ending to the Second Chronicles :D

Actually, I thought both chronicles ended definitively. Except they didn't.:)

But they felt like they should have.

Or another way to look at it is, a reader isn't forced to buy all three Chronicles, but he/she can stop at the first trilogy if he/she wants, or stop at the second if he/she prefers, or continue all the way through the last tetralogy if he/she is wise :D

Remember SRD wrote that Depsite cannot be destroyed. It needs to be in place to oppose Hope/Faith. Without Evil there can be no Good.

Well, that's for "Thomas Covenant"'s Chronicles.

But there may be "Land" Creators all over our 'real' world.

Maybe next: "The Chronicles of Üngbørd Grÿčşårtd, the Ambiguously Perplexed", with his nipple-ring being the miraculous talisman of that other Land.

Imagine the possibilities!

Or not...

Üngbørd Grÿčşårtd... I know that guy... he cheats at cards. I also thought that the endings for both chronicles were pretty final. I know because each time I read them I had that little wierd feeling that I get at the end of a series. Well, that's over, kind of thing

Well, at the end of each of the preceding two Chronicles I felt a large letdown... The Land is SO rich I wanted something more than the brief glimpses of "after" - like High Lord Mhoram at Glimmermere in the first Chronicles, and the "brief word" spoken to Sunder and Hollian by Linden before she faded in the Second.

I thought Thomas Covenant's end was pretty definitive - but I did, and do want the Land to continue.
