Crimes Against Music

Post by Nav »

I thought we ought to have a thread where we can all vent our collective spleens about actions which we think should be labelled as crimes against music. They can be anything you want, just be prepared to justify your choices. Here's a few of mine:

A1's cover of Take on Me: Another soulless boy band cover a great song and sully its memory for ever. We could probably fill an entire thread with bad covers alone.

One of the 90's definitive anthems, Manic Street Preachers' A Design for Life, being kept from the number one spot by tazer-wielding, police-attacking nutcase Mark Morrison with the worthless and faddy Return of the Mack. I'm actually ashamed to admit that I share a home town with that psychotic dwarf.

Michael Jackson advising his then good friend Paul McCartney to try and buy the Beatles back catalogue, only to later outbid him himself. The Beatles: financing Michael Jackson's twisted ego trips since 1985.

I'm going to see about getting some sort of affiliation with the War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague, but in the mean time just fire away.
Q. Why do Communists drink herbal tea?
A. Because proper tea is theft.

Just saw this on VH1 and it's a good one....Celine Dion singing AC/DC's "You Shook Me All Night Long".

For that and many other reasons she deserves what happened to Mel Gibson at the end of "Braveheart".

I shuddered at Tiffany's remake of the Beatles' I Saw Her Standing There.

Celine Dion singing AC/DC? Sigh. Another nauseating chapter in her career of mediocre music-making.

I thought Puff Daddy's (or whatever name he's using right now) remake of the Police's Every Breath You Take was lame, though people in hip-hop and rap circles seemed to think it was cool. Sure, just take a classic song, add a big, thumping beat and a self-congratulatory video, and call it a tune.

Puff Daddy ripped off Kashmir, too. Then again, Jimmy Page has no taste, and he actually helped Puff Daddy with it.

A Perfect Circle covering John Lenon's Imagine is pretty good. And I think they are doing Pink Floyd's The Wall too. Korn is doing Word Up, thats a fun song and I think they did pretty good with that.

I have to say I'm fed up with remakes in general. Have people run out of ideas, or what? I think it's died down, but a few years back it seemed like every song I heard was a remake of a Top 40 from the 60s.

Baby I Love Your Way/Freebird Medely by Will To Power. If you have never seen/heard this on VH1, then thank your lucky stars. Unfortunately, I was not so lucky. Trust me, it's the worst cover...ever!

Ug, that is horrible. I'd add Shinedown's atrocious cover of Skynyrd's "Simple Man".

Boy Zone - Baby Can I hold you, by Trace Chapman
Ronan Keating - Futher and Son, by Cat Stevens (Yusur Islam)

Really, Really bad. Most copies of songs are bad these days.

Scissor Sisters' (?) cover of Comfortably Numb. I cringe every time I hear/see it (which is not very often thank God)

Madonna's cover of John Lennon's "Imagine", the opener of the Tsunami Aid Concert on NBC.

Made me want to vomit.

The horrible cover of the Band Aid song, by a load of insipid wasters.

Made me want them to vomit.
