Here is what I think the plan is, Jay. And anyone else that is curious.

We would like to try to recruit Watch members that are not planning on submitting a story to chair the selection committee/editing team.
I would like to see 3 members on the committee (to whom you would email your submission) but we could probably use all the help we can get for the editing process. I imagine we will have to post a request in the Announcements forum for volunteers.

Since I'm a dope when it comes to proper grammar and spelling I'm out of the editing team and since I'm certainly submitting a story I'm out of the running for the selection committee. :D

It would be a damn shame if Dragonlily didn't submit something, but I think she'd be the best editor here, regardless. Unless we could talk that SRD dude into editing......

This really sounds like a great idea. Has anyone looked into the sort of cost range we'll be talking about?

Nah, we just told Doubleday you'd pay for it all.

About submissions... I have an idea.

We create a gmail account, and give everyone involved the password. Submissions can be stored there as attatchments. Infact, I think I'll get on it now... unless someone has a better idea.

Oh, and as TOM said, we need some non-submitters that are interested in the project to be in the selection/rejection team (creator ;) :P).

I don't want to seem dismissive or heartless, but I'd much rather see any profits going towards something that will benefit everyone on the watch (not that eradicating AIDS wouldn't be a benefit to the whole human race), so I'd much prefer them to go towards running costs for the watch.

I do a bit of desktop publishing--I'd be happy to put the finished book together in a format that cafepress or whatever could turn into a book, and that would be pretty good-looking. Which means that you'd need to add a week or two to the schedule, and I'd need to get edited stories from the editing/selecting committee, preferably with the corrections all put in.

If anyone wants to use me as a publishing-know-how resource, just PM me. I might not know everything, but I probably know enough to help out with making a scheddy. This sounds like a really cool plan!
Halfway down the stairs Is the stair where I sit. There isn't any other stair quite like it. I'm not at the bottom, I'm not at the top; So this is the stair where I always stop.

That would be great, Myste. We could definitely use your help.
Once we have a committee setup and know who will be volunteering to help with the editing and so on we can coordinate with you about dealing with the finished product.

I've published a book through Cafepress. The PDF formating was a pain at the time since I didn't have a full version of Adobe editor. I had to use a free, third party pdf generator suggested by Cafepress and the bloody thing didn't work but I eventually found a program that DID work. I created my own cover art but it looks like we'll have the assistance of EDGE in that regard. I'm really excited about how things are shaping up. :D

Regarding cover art - do we want a general, 'KW' cover - or maybe have some sort of vote for best story, and illustrate a scene from that?

May be getting a bit ahead here, but I'm chomping at the bit. :)

I would have thought the latter would make a better cover. It has my vote.

I second that idea. We'll know better once we begin gettting submissions.

I've got working on my story and found that my abilities come nowhere near my expectations.
Oh well, I'll do my best, I think the story deserves to be written, I've had it plotted for a while, it just took something like this to get me to write the thing.

I agree. The administrators pay the costs of the Watch out of their own pockets, so I'm in favour of putting any proceeds towards that.

Since I'm a fanatic about correct grammar and spelling, I would like to participate as part of the editing team--if I'm worthy of Dragonlily's company.

(I know, the thread for volunteer editors isn't up yet. Just jumping the gun because...I'm sooo excited, and I just can't hide it/I'm about to lose control and I like it, I like it...sorry, Pointer Sisters flashback.)

Very cool, MM. This project is off to a tremendous start. I've been talking to several people who are really excited about writing something. I think I've got an interesting story to contribute and my daughter (Prorider514) has come up with a very neat idea she's begun working on. If all goes according to plan we may be able to begin purchasing the book by mid February. That would be outstanding. :-)

A suggestion to Edge: If you're chomping, why not just start creating? I mean... what have you got to lose? :)

I'm still twiddling my thumbs, waiting for inspiration  To quote SRD: "I don't get many ideas". I have to wait for them to hit. I'll submit if I get an idea in time. Writing it within the deadline shouldn't be a problem. Most of my short stories are about 1000-1500 words, and typically take around an hour and a half to write :P
