One of the best "stand alones" I've read in quite awhile is The Dragon Waiting by John M. Ford. It's one of the few "alternate histories" I've seen that actually works, and it's exquisitely written. It's Fantasy (kinda in the way Brotherhood of the Wolf and The Thirteenth Warrior are Fantasy...if you know what I mean... ).

Danlo passed The Dragon Waiting on to me when he was done, and I also loved it. It was a great read! 8)

I read that a couple days ago - thought it was good, but nothing impressive.

Late to this discussion :? , but another word in for George R.R. Martin and China Mieville, though I've started the latter's "Iron Council" a number of times . . . Desperately need time!

George R.R. Martin is at least as good.

Other top fantasy writers are Guy Gavriel Kay, Patricia McKillip and Terry Prattchett.
