Editors and selection team, I have identified a paragraph that requires editing - as it doesnt make sense in regards to the main character.

I would like to request that once final editing is completed on any given story that the manuscript be emailed back to the author for a 1 or 2 day final approval of the changes before it is readied for publication.

BTW I am currently 3/4 the way through my story and should be submitting in the next few days. :-)

I agree, TOM.

And glad to hear you're making progress again!

I think it would be okay...Joy, what do you think? In formal publishing, there's usually an author approval process after copyediting.

The reason I hesitate is that many people take edits very personally ("God forbid the Philistines tamper with my deathless prose!!!") rather than seeing them as the editor's way of making the work better. I guess I'm worried that Joy (or I) will put a lot of time and effort into editing these pieces, only to get them back from the author with all our suggested changes rejected. I'd really like to avoid that if possible.

Maybe Joy and I could come up with some basic guidelines on the most constructive ways authors can respond to suggested changes. If we're all working under the same assumptions, it might make things easier.

The committee is going. :D

We are having a chat on MSN this coming weekend. I wanted to put it off until we had more works, but the deadline is fast approaching and there are some things we need to discuss.

So submit, submit, submit. :D

When do we get feedback on our submissions? Surely someone has read my short story - I haven't heard a thing, which is making me concerned.

I agree with Myste on this. Part of writing is conveying the desired ideas to the reader, and if the reader (the editor, in this case), doesn't get the ideas the writer is trying to put across, the editor will be trying to help the writer convey his/her ideas more clearly.

As I already told VS, I know what it's like to see my writing turned into someone else's writing by an editor who thought she was a co-writer, and I don't want to do that to anyone else. In the editing process, the editor represents the reader's viewpoint, and also acts as an interpreter if needed. The story is the writer's.

Myste, Dragonlily I just want to say that I have no fears of any kind in regard to my narrative "voice" being altered to the point of dissatisfaction. I for one am so grateful that you have volunteered to take on what might be a rather daunting task. You guys have my most heartfelt thank you. I would add to my previous comments that if a final evaluation period slows down the process too much it should not be implemented. I offered it as a suggestion because I am going through that scenario with my own book.

Here are some additional thoughts that have occurred to me recently.

1. Since the Anthology appears to have some real enthusiasm behind it I suggest that when we decide on a title it might want to include "Volume 1" as I expect there will probably be a sequel or two.
2. Wouldn't it be cool if we were to ask SRD to write a short forward for the book. :-)
3. Since it is a forgone conclusion that we will send SRD a copy of the Anthology, wouldn't it be cool if we were able to get all the authors and editors to sign the finished book for him? Kind of an interesting turnabout wouldn't you agree? :-)

It wouldn't be practical to mail a copy of the book all over the world to catch all the authors, but it is certainly possible to get faxes from all the authors and include them with the book.

I meant to share the "Foreward" with Myste, but if SRD is willing to write it(!), I will write the same kind of little intro that the authors do.

Vol 1???

Once the selection committee makes a decision on your story, I am sure you will be one of the first to know, UV. :)
