First post - thoughts on "Runes"
Greetings, fellow Unbelievers. Having read the First and Second Chronicles more times than I'd care to admit, I tore through "Runes" in two days (paid half price for it at B & N, and would've read slower if I had paid more). I was a little hesitant at first - reread the "Gap" books, and at times found SRD's fondness for the thesaurus and passion for flashbacks/exposition to be laughable at times (was he paid by the word for that series?) - nevertheless, SRD is head and shoulders above every sci-fi and fantasy writer in terms of character and thematic development. Plus his imagination kicks legions of ass. So happy to say that I loved - LOVED - "Runes". Yes, there were too many recaps, and nothing about the current plight facing the Land knocked me for a loop (sorry, but Kevin's Dirt and caesures just ain't the Sunbane). But the best thing about SRD is that you know you're in for a ride, and for an opening book this was a winner. (I dig the Ramen and their condescending "Bloodguard" smack they run on the Haruchai). Kudos to SRD for adding new dimensions to Linden; her age and motherhood are already factoring in to the story, and should play an interesting role.

Yeah, I'm kinda glad that this isn't "The Chronicles of Linden Avery". But I'll say this: I think she's interesting because we're not sure how she's going to change over the course of this series. As she hints at, she's never been "the boss", and now finds herself in the role of leader and decision maker. And it's clear that this new crisis is very personal to her; both the Land's need and the plight of her son are situations that arose out of the choices SHE made, so for her to step aside and let others fight her battles may be something she's not prepared to do. There's definitely some steel in Linden.
Spoiler
If in fact TC has returned, there's a potential for conflict, as he's given her cryptic messages, and she may not trust him entirely based on hs own advice.
