A Covenant Mud

Post by Lumikant »

I'm currently working on a Covenant mud set between the first and second series. In case you didn't know, a MUD is a text based multiplayer game played over the internet, and the one I'm working on will be free to play. If there were to be a game based on the chronicals, what would you like to see in it? As I said, its based between the first and second series, shortly after the Clave has taken control of Revelstone. Thanks a bunch.

mud

Post by Lumikant »

The computer would be the dungeon master, along with the team of immortals who would run quests, evolve the storyline, all by playing the parts of The Creator, Foul, the ravers, the forestals, etc. Along with the acts done by the players, the story would be written. For the most part the players decide where the story goes, but the immortals make sure it doesnt get out of hand. I.E. no on can put out the Banefire. And the Haruchai are a race you can play. they have a few classes available to them.

Would you be interested in trying a mud Quann? I'm always willing to help someone learn how to play. Also, what does everyone think of the name, Lands Blight: Rise of the Clave?

I would be willing to try it. i would be interested in seeing how deep you could go with it(basically what you can do in the mud and how your actions affect the environment). Alot of my time right now is taken up by Asherons Call....basically a graphical mud, but yeah i would play.

how much interaction with the gameworld would you like to see? currently we're working on making most mobs (computer controlled people/beings) have some sort of AI or interaction.

hmm,
well, i think player actions should affect the shape of things that happen in the land. i realize that even with the best AI we wont be able to carry out a full blown conversation with the in game char's. i think there should be some quests also, maybe things like getting a lords-staff, lorics krill,a quest to demonstrate your worthiness of being borne by a ranyhyn. if you want to be a loremaster or a lord or something like that you should have to complete a series of quests or something along those lines so that you have to earn your title or position rather than having it given to you.
also, how well developed will the rhadhamaeral and lillanril(sorry about spelling) lore be?
anyways, those were just a few of my thoughts on it. :D

Well, I think I can do a fair job of explaining. I'm the other person who works on the MUD that lumikant is talking about. I am the head coder there. The mud is an environment that is somewhat limited. What makes it alive and a lush environment is the fact that immortals (staff members) are there frequently. They have the ability to inhabit monsters, create objects, and set up quests. The mobs have programmed AI of sorts... they respond to stimulus of certain types, but it is an if-then type of response. The computer serves as the roleplaying books and dice roller and all of that fancy jazz. You advance by questing for immortals, or monsters (I'll refer to monsters as mobs from now on, mobile creatures...) or by killing monsters, for rewards for good roleplaying, and so on. It is an environment you kind of have to get used to. It is similar to graphical MUDs in all ways, accept for graphics really. We are opening to the public for testing at the end of this month. Then we will have our player races (like stonedownor or waynhim) and classes (like gravelingas, or warhaft...) in. When the day comes that we're open for testing, we'll more openly advertise, but as we are in development stages, It wouldn't be a good idea. Pretty long post so far, so i'll stop here.

Yeah we are doing alpha/beta testing. At the end of this month, if kevinswatch hasn't posted a link or anything like that, we'll possibly put one in here. Lumikant and my (gaunt) home pages are our website. Theres info and connection options there. We definately need playtesters, so if you know how to MUD (it's simple) or you want to play, check it out. Right now, all of the changed code isn't implemented, so there is nothing unique about the mud accept areas. End of this month, we are putting out first version. It's free too.

hello all,
i was just reading over my previous posts in this thread and i realize that they didnt make much sense, which is what happens when you are trying to post from work and have one eye on the boss
anyways, here is the corrections:
I play a graphical mud NOW called asherons call. i have never played a text mud, although i do know what they are.
I did try to play a TC mud a few years back but couldnt get it to work, but i wasnt as computer literate THEN as i am NOW.
i had to fix it or it would have bugged me until i did,lol 8O

Yeah, our mud is the same as a graphical mud, except you type commands. Unfortunatly our host just went down for unknown reasons and I havent been able to get ahold of the super user and talk to him about it yet. If anyone has a Linux box with a static ip and some bandwidth and wants to give us a shell to host our mud on we would be glad.

Post by Quaan »

what size computer does your server need to be? can you convert a tower that is part of a typical home computer into a server?

Well, if you don't know what a server is, you probably couldn't help. We're talking a computer running Linux for an operating system, with a fairly high connection so we don't steal up too much of it, like cable, t1, adsl, and so on. I'm calling the owner of our old server tomorrow (3-19) and seeing whats up, so we may not even need a new server. I spoke with him earlier this month at a meeting we attend, and he mentioned not haveing the server up soon due to costs of bandwidth being too high. Either way we're still working on the MUD, it just isn't up in any way at the moment. Once again, we do have a webpage, its in my information under homepage, or heck, i'll just post a link here. landsblight.siffer.net
This site goes down every once in a while, but it's been fine for at least a week =P. Check it out for a little more information about the MUD, although not much. The site is under construction just about as much as the MUD is, but I try to update it regularly. All of the e-mail info and such is current to the best of my knowledge. I think thats it.
