Jazz & Jazz Fusion

Post by danlo »

I stumbled across this new fantastic jazz violinist named Regina Carter on the dreaded tube this morning. Her stuff is amazing! I haven't heard such good music since Jean Luc Ponty...She became the first non-classical violinist to receive the Paganicci award and was allowed to play his rare 250 year old violin. Her newest CD is appropriately named: Paganicci, after the dream. and is WELL worth checking out.

I've also noted that Vespers is sorely lacking in a Jazz category (sorry duchess, jazz to me is so intense I can't lump it in with gospel and blues.) As Wynton Marsalis said, "Modern jazz is becoming increasingly unviable in the commercial sense." So I really encourage y'all to check some of this music out and support this genre before it's totally lost in the public eye.

Random namedropping primer:
vocalists: Mel Torme, Ella, Billie Holiday, Etta James, Al Jureau
guitar: George Benson, Pat Metheny, John McGlauglin, Al Dimeola, Lee Ritenour, Jaco Pastorious
bass: Ron Carter, Stanley Clarke
drums: Billy Cobham, Buddy Rich
keyboards: McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, Lyle Mays, Thelonius Monk, Chick Corea, George Winston, Joe Sample
sax: John Klemmer, Gato Barbieri, Stanley Turrentine, Stan Getz, John Coltrane, Charlie Byrd (pretty decent guitarist too), Gerry Mulligan, Ritchie Cole, Grover Washington Jr.
flute: Tim Wiesberg
violin: Jean Luc Ponty, Jerry Goodman
horn: Chuck Mangione, Maynard Ferguson, Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis
harp: Andres Vollenwieder
vibes: Lionel Hampton
percussion: Tito Puentes

Fusion-type groups I recommend:
Return to Forever
Weather Report
The Pat Metheny Group
Ottmar Liebert and Luna Negra
The Mahavishnu Orchestra
Jeff Lorber Fusion
The Brecker Bros Band
Brand X (with Phil Collins)

Must have CDs:
Birds of Fire: Mahavishnu Orchestra
We Live Here: Pat Metheny Group
Winelight: Grover Washington Jr.
Don't Mess with Mr T: Stanley Turrentine
My Favorite Things: John Coltrane
Passion, Grace and Fire & Friday Night in San Francisco: John McGlaughlin, Al Dimeola and Paco de Lucia
Wizard's Island: Jeff Lorber Fusion
Sketches of Spain: Miles Davis
Extrapolation: John McGlaughlin
Touch: John Klemmer

much more 2 come...

I just knew somebody was going to call me on that. That's happened on two websites and three call in radio shows I've participated in in the past-I always seem to forget the OPT. If I'm going to list Gerry Mulligan's "bass-san-dos" (his wife was, actually, a great musician herself) and Ottmar's samba/rock/flamencos, who could, technically, be called either New Age or World Beat as well as masters such as Byrd, Coltrane, Monk, Davis etc... I had best not forget them. Light enjoyable sampler '61

Last album I bought was "Inner Mounting Flame" by the Mahavishnu Orchestra, and let me say it's a masterpiece from start to finish. For my money the best jazz-fusion. Don't know where it's been all my life!

Nice list, except Jaco played bass. :D

The best Mahavishnu Orchestra album, IMO, was Birds of Fire . . . with Visions of the Emerald Beyond a close second. I think Inner Mounting Flame was probably third best.

Conspicuously missing: Bela Fleck and the Flecktones!!

Got Birds of Fire two days ago. Very nice! Not sure I like it more than their debut, but every track has its merits and it might be a tad more cohesive, as the bottom half of the record is short, due to the rather long jam/workout on the first half (One Word, which danlo has posted).

But one song ;-)

A couple more guitarists to add are:

Larry Carlton - his early stuff is fusion-based, his most recent work is jazzy blues. Disregard the smooth jazz / Fourplay stuff ;)

John Scofield - almost anything of his is fabulous.

I'm sure there are other fusion groups I just can't think of right now.

Jeff Lorber's a great keyboardist, but I forgot that the Fusion also consisted Dave Koz, Chad Wackerman and Alec Milst... Wizard's Island...bet you can't name me the original sax player of this group. Major trivia question--WGDs awarded!!! 8)

He also played flute, according to what I found.
