I just met SRD in person!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Post by danlo »

I just shook hands with Stephen R. Donaldson!!! I'm dead serious--I've almost passed out 4 times in the last 2 hours---I can't compose myself! I met him at the movies--he and his family were watching Minority Report at the downtown theater in Albuquerque. As many of u know, or don't know, I live in Albq. and SRD lives nearby in Corrales NM. I started watching the previews and a family of 3 sat down just 2 my left in the row below. The dad was skinny, had puffy white hair, glasses and a little white goatee. I said 2 myself damm that guy looks familiar! I looked @ him from time 2 time and remembered the very brief time I met him @ a seminar @ UNM in '86 and said omg that's Stephen R. Donaldson!!!--he was very interested in the preview 4 Solaris and was intensely watching the futuristic effects in MR. I left the theater just as the movie ended--when the family finally came out I followed them down the sidewalk. As I approached I said "Excuse me sir!" and his wife turned around and looked @ me with laser beams eyes as if 2 say "get lost, drop dead". SRD slowly turned around and said "Yes can I help you?" I gave him my name and said "I'm sorry 2 disturb u and ur family but r u Stephen Donaldson?" He said yes and "I said thank you, thank u very much 4 everything u've done." as we shook hands, I swear I felt a bolt of lightning pass between us. Then he said "You're very kind" and I let them go. When his wife looked at me I swear I was looking @ Linden Avery!! His daughter is about 12 or 13, long brown hair and very beautiful. I kno u guys would have wanted me 2 ask him a million questions but he said I could write him through his publisher and that he would remember me. I let them go 4 2 reasons 1st of all I was totally star-struck and 2nd I didn't want 2 disturb his family outing on a beautiful Saturday night..God! my idol I just can't believe it--I mean I personally met him instead of going down the row @ the seminar and just saying thank u...real quick.

Very cool, Danlo! :)
"Do you have a wife?"
"At one time."
"What happened to her?"
"She has been dead."
"How long ago did she die?"
"Two thousand years."

I don't know what I would do in such a situation. I think I would die or faint or something. Or make a fool of myself. Luckily I live on a wrong continent.

oh luxury!! .. a car??!!

well yes if I had a car mayhap I would have undertaken the 3-400km journey ..

.. now if you said you had done this trip on foot or by bike .. now that would have been impressive! .. and certainly would unquestionably qualify you as being a fanatic!!

.. which infact isnt even being questioned..

Had SRD held an appearance in Sydney .. I would gleefully skate/cycle/pogo stick jump .. my entire way to Sydney .. just to see him ..

<really hopes this solemn declaration is never tested>  :P

Too freakin' cool that you met SRD! I totally understand that you were too dazed to ask him about the 3d Chrons. I will find it in my heart to forgive you...

Good thing you didn't tell him that you almost cut off two of your fingers to be more like TC. Then Mrs. SRD would've really looked at you funny! 8O

Like everyone else, I am jealous. I am glad for you. From everything I have ever read or heard about SD is that he is a very quiet man that appreciates his privacy. I would like very much to meet him, and perhaps talk for a while. I'm sure it would most interesting. But I'm sure that many others would like to do the same. Let's just hope the 3rd Chronicles are on their way.

When you write to him invite him to visit this site. Maybe we could get him to post from time to time.
