21 Grams

Post by [Syl] »

Great acting, decent story, bad editing. To a point, I get what they were trying to do with the cut scenes, but overall, the movie made me feel like I'd already seen it 15 minutes in, the other 1:45 was just filling in the details. And when you spend over ten seconds of film on a leaf blower, it really should be a damned important leaf blower. Instead, a lot of scenes, thus a lot of my time (not just watching, but trying to fit it into the timeline) was wasted.

One good thing I will say, though, is that the director kept the camera on the actors longer than what you usually see. IMO, this really lets the actors' skills shine.

Oh ok......I'll have to look out for that. 8) Amorres Perros was a pretty good flick. :D

Finally saw the movie. Liked the cinematography and acting. The non-linear narrative works okay here, but I agree with Caer Sylvanus that the amount of time-jumping that goes on gets a little exasperating. I didn't have a problem with the leaf blower scene, though :) . I thought the story was awkwardly resolved: they were trying to arrive at a life-affirming (if not exactly happy) conclusion to dispel the negativity of what had gone before, but it felt too convenient. Maybe the filmmakers wanted the audience to make its own leap of faith, like one of the movie's characters, whose faith was severely tested.

I watched this yesterday. Overall it was a good movie with great acting, but I have to agree that the constant jumping-around drove me nuts.

Encryptic's question from the other thread about this movie is a good one:
Spoiler
Why did Sean Penn's character shoot himself at the end (that appears to be what happened)?
