I took LFB to class to read during the lunch break... and I couldn't even get all the way through "Golden Boy." Very early in that first chapter, Covenant is remembering his time with Joan - how supportive she was, and how happy he was with her. Just a few words painted such a joyful, vibrant portrait of her that I had to put the book down for fear I'd start crying and make a fool of myself.
Knowing Joan's story and her circumstances during Runes, especially in her translation to the Land, makes those first few pages of LFB heartbreaking. The change was not so startling to me in the Second Chronicles, probably because TC spent so much time remembering her and bemoaning her abandonment that I didn't feel very sorry for her. Now, though... she may have wanted to protect Roger, but in no world could she have possibly imagined that she would fall so far. The only saving grace might be that she is no longer lucid enough to realize how far she's fallen.
Here's a thought: Does Covenant know Joan is in the Land? What do you think was his reaction, or what will it be when he finds out?

The Tragedy of Joan
"We probably could have saved ourselves, but we were too damned lazy to try very hard... and too damn cheap." - Kurt Vonnegut
"Now if you remember all great paintings have an element of tragedy to them. Uh, for instance if you remember from last week, the unicorn was stuck on the aircraft carrier and couldn't get off. That was very sad. " - Kids in the Hall

Surely Covenant knows that Joan is there, and I think he will want to do whatever is necessary to help her. Remember, he sacrificed himself for her once before, and I believe that he would do so again.
As to her character - I have to admit that that is the most intriguing part of Runes for me, and I can't wait to see what SRD does with Joan in the LC!

oh, i almost missed this topic. I also hope that Joan's character gets more explored in this chapter. Wouldn't it be good to see her past and her character explored in much the same way that we saw Linden's in the second chronicles. I'd love to know what made her tick and her feelings during the onset of TCs leprosy. A good old dose of "first person" narrative here would surely be an intrigueing addition to the new books, don't you think?
I definitely think that SRD should and will explore this issue a bit more. Especially as the Ravers and foul must still be tormenting her! Will we see her redmption? Or will she will be left as bit part player, merely there to make up the numbers. I think and hope that the former will be the way for SRD to go.

A lot can be done with Joan-since SRD admitted in the GI that Joan is indeen dead. Well the dead from our world have held some great possitions in the Land..Caer Caveral..the Arch of time...

Hmm... a potential for redemption in death... Why do I see a showdown between Joan and Roger coming up? Wishful thinking, maybe. On the whole, she seems to me to be so far gone that she will, indeed, just ramin a bit player.

I'm really hoping she wont remain a bit part player. I think with all the male characters there seem to be, playing the larger roles in these last chronicles that we will need more female presences in the land. Don't get me wrong, i know we have Linden, the Mahdoubt(may not actually even be female) and maybe the first of the search to come back, along with any dead Elena's and so forth, but the powerful players seem to be taking the shape of males IE - Jeremiah, Anele, Liand, TC, Esmer, Roger, Kastenessen, Foul, The Haruchai, The Male Ramen not to mention the reappearance of any dead Lords.
Sorry i'm not being a moan i hope, but come on SRD give us a real Evil female to excite us. Maybe Infelice could come into the story to take the Elohim Agenda forward. I mean we all know they do have one right? In fact i have always been fascinated by Infelice as she raises sooooo many questions about the nature of the elohim.
- How did she beome the "main girl" so to speak?
- is she older or wiser than the others?
- if so, this implies new Elohim can be made or born/die?
- what sets her apart from the rest?
- does she have a title among them?(cant remember or find any hint of it at the Elohimfest)
- does she have more/greater power than the others
i suppose i could go on all day.
Anyway, the point is i feel a mlarger female presence is needed.
