I'm really sorry about my previous post--it's not the WGDs it's how people act w/them. Vain really has busted butt 2 make this a fun place. I had a raving fit do 2 too much pitchbrew. Some people were at each others throats, mainly off-screen (PMs, IM stuff like that) and I made the mistake of getting caught up in it. No more soap operas--I'm only here 4 fun from now on.

fall far and well Pilots!
You know something? I'm beginning to think the WGD are starting to leave a bad taste.
The only way to accrue any are to post like mad; enough to where the interest means something. But then I get criticized for merely hitting the submit button a lot.
As soon as any new items arrive, they are gobbled up by the select few who are 'earning' 1000s a day in interest.
Yeah, they just don't taste very good anymore.(JMHO)
I can take or leave 'em now, and just go with the flow.

Dromond, please keep in mind that everyone is different. If you look at my posts, most of mine are on the short side...and I am not ashamed of that. And there is no reason to be ashamed or feel bad about any of your posts, either.
And as for the other, sometimes Vain will put up really cool inexpensive items for sale, too. I love both of my duckies and neither one cost very much! I can't afford any of the big ticket items, either, but probably enjoy my small things as much as I would enjoy any big things...I hope Vain will make more small items like the two different ducks in the future.

I think I speak for the rest of us guys w/ the big interest bucks when I say that if anybody really has their heart set on getting something, I always have more than enough WGDs to spare. Just let me know (seriously, I've tried very hard to give these things away!
)... even if you just want 1k or something to put away and collect some interest on...

Ah, lovely! We have assassins in our midst. Next thing you know, we'll be having a holiday for everyone to committ treason and sing blasphemy at the top their voices!
Wonderful indeed!

I personally don't have a problem with the WGD's. I think they're fun, but I could take them or leave them. And I know Vain worked his pitukiss off on them. I have gotten the feeling from time to time that they might be taken a little too seriously though, detracting from the purity of the fun here at the Watch. Maybe we should hold a vote as to whether we want to keep them or not.
Should we get rid of them, we could institute some other system for getting cool stuff. For instance, we could go with an award system for # of posts. X number of posts wins you a graveling pot or a lomillalor staff, or a white gold ring. Or perhaps we could set up a real money account, where we donate to the upkeep of the site, or to a charity of our choice (something to do with literacy, or leprosy would be perfect) and get prizes that way. X amount of dollars donated gets you a graveling pot, etc. Or a combination of the two. Say you can get a white gold ring for 5000 posts, or a $100 donation. That way, if you want something bad enough, you don't have to post like mad if you've got a little extra cash, and you're also given the opportunity to accomplish some good.
Just some ideas to toss around if people are truly unhappy with the WGD's. This is far too good a group of folks to mar things by getting snippy with each other over monopoly money. I love each and every one of you.

Erm....I'm accepting $100 donations to my favourite charity - known as Moi Inc
Some really great options guys. I'm glad danlo raised the issue because I figure we'll end up with something better as a result - and kudos to him for doing so (pitchbrew and all)
I was thinking along the lines - more long termish (dunno if it's viable or not) to buy "Amazon Tokens" from the "Shop" and if you had X tokens, you'd get to choose a book or something from Amazon for $x (no real idea yet) and we could maybe donate into a paypal account that will fund the purchases (I have no idea).
The charity option sounds great as well and maybe we can explore it further.

First I have to say .. Earthfriend you have an admirable and exemplary attitude and we are made a greater site by the addition of Watchpersons like yourself
*shakes head in disbelief*
This is one of 'THE' finest literary fan-sites sites on the internet .. <imho THE very finest!
The Watch is a great community of like minded individuals
.. bright, intelligent and ..
.. by and large respectful members
.. who uphold and maintain the ethos of this site and Donaldson's creation ..
It has been of this callibre from its inception on the 11 Novemeber 2000 .. when Jay first establised this site on ez-board .. And even though the site has been moved to ihugny .. it is still the same ..
at the end of the day .. wgd's are meaningless .. not worth getting bent out of shape about ..
they were introduced by Vain with the intent to add a bit of colour and a bit of fun .. is all ..
Perhaps .. it is inevitable .. that people will get competetive .. and maybe even lose perspective ..
maybe
where there's money and possessions at stake
we dont have to be about 'getting cool stuff' .. 'destroying cool stuff' .. come what .. its still a Donaldson fan-site .. the focus could be better served by remembering what thats about for you ..
.. this is THE place to perpetuate one's passion for TCTC and other works of SRD .. its why most come here
.. its an opportunity to explore the humanity of his creation .. to emulate the ethos of Donaldson's literary genius .. to rub shoulders with other like-minded souls .. and to engage in an exploration of the essence of our own humanity ..
all the other stuff is just window dressing and a bit of harmless fun!!
and if kept in that perspective .. it bares no risk of getting out of hand ..
This place is brilliant .. always was .. even before the implementation of the 'fun stuff' .. and always will be ..
btw great ideas birdandbear ..
precisely!!!! .. and your expression 'monopoly money' is whats really being debated here ..B&B wrote:I have gotten the feeling from time to time that they might be taken a little too seriously though, detracting from the purity of the fun here at the Watch. Just a thought-
The items and WGD could only be made viewable from our profiles and the personal inventory menu under the "Shop" command. I think if this happened everyone would be alot less intimidated because we wouldn't be forced to see who has what a gazillion times a day.
That way we could stay focused on the important things that matter in a community like Skyweir pointed out.
I agree that is all in fun and I would hate to see such things go away since I came here not knowing any different.

That would make the pages load faster for those with slower connections. I kind of like showing my stuff off, though I admit it's a little ostentatious... either way, I suppose.

WAIT!! Don't do that. I just wasted a few thousand WGD's trying that! I thought the latest thing bought would be on display. But you have sell the thing on display in order to get it off display. The next thing moves up to the display window. If that's not what you want on display, you have to sell that too. On and on until the thing you want eventually gets into the display window. *whew*
