What's in a name?

Post by SoulQuest1970 »

Have you ever reflected upon your name or names and wonder what they mean and why you were named as such? What about nicknames?

Ok, Teresa Ann means a God-given Harvester. You put in my Confirmation name, Marie, and it means a bitter God-given harvester. I've always imagined this old rusted out tractor sitting in the middle of a deserted field.

I was almost named Elizabeth which has something to so with God but I can't remember specifically. I was also almost named Gloria which means Glorious.

Did I get these names? Noooooo, because my dad knew an Elizabeth and a Gloria in school that were really mean, so he picked Teresa.

I am a bitter God-given harvester.

Hmmm....

In high school (Catholic) I was nicknamed Mother Teresa because I was really sweet, told really good stories (espeically at senior retreat where they asked me to tell a bedtime story... one that I had written in creative writing class and they all said I woould make a really good mom one day), I didn't cuss, drink, etc. I got my feelings hurt really easy so when one of the kids called me Mother Teresa she pointed out it was not meant to hurt me or offend me. It was better than being called goody-goody.

Hmmm...

Now I have morphed into Mama T and the T stands for tough cuz Mama T don't take nothing off no one. Well that is according to all the kids. :) They also say that the T stands for terrific and talented. That's right... who's da mom? That would be me! My friend Charlene is Mama C and the kids joke that the C stands for crazy and crabby. lol

Hmmm...

I named Alex Alexandra meaning savior of mankind and Andromeda after the galaxy/constellation/woman resuced by Perseus and Pegasus. I call her monkey head and goober monkey head... also jibberjabberjaws. So far she lives up to each of those names... although not sure about the saving mankind though. She wants to save endangered species and the Earth (tree hugger) so I guess it still applies.

I named Calli Callista after the most beautiful woman in Greek Mythology and Anastasia which means she shall rise again. Long story about reincarnation which we suspect. I also call her Calliboo and Callico Kitty. She also lives up to her names... well the reincarnation part is a strong feeling and I think she is pretty darn gorgeous. She is soft, gentle and sweet like a kitten and when you make her mad she yowels really loud. She also does what I call the "hey Moe" when she drops to the floor and spins around in a temper fit.

Nick... man what can I say. He is Nicolas George Raven. He is named Nicolas because Alex said that was his name. She would not budge on that. He is George after his uncle, George Bannerman III. And he is Raven because of his mystery and magic. As my sis-in-law said (the Catholic/Shaman) he doesn't need magic, he is magic. She says the girls have magic, but polar opposites and he is the balancing force. He really seems to balance things. He draws out responsibility in Alex (where she lacks) and brings the joy of living to Calli (who was always too serious for a baby). He is Nick Da Man because... he IS da man! He walks with a confident swagger starting from the first day he walked... head held high, Fonzie strut, right arm swinging casually by his side, and now he can even snap his fingers and he is only 3! He refers to himself as a Butt or a Turd... I hate to admit it, but he lives up to those names too. He also says I should sell him to the gypsies. Calli named him Bubby when she was very little because she did not speak very clear until she was 5. It sounded like Nickwicks or bebebrudder... the later was turned into Bubby. He is a Nick Da Man and a Bubby Man.

Ok I know what I was thinking with my kids, but what were my parents thinking? I have reched peace with my name. I used to hate it. It still doesn't feel quite right to me though.

Ok here endeth the ramble.

My name is Kimberly Layne. I've seen it translated as "noble", "noble one" and "from the royal meadow." (I particularly like that last one!) My daughter is Katherine Morgan. Katherine just because I love that name and Morgan from Morgana- King Arthur's sister and a powerful witch in her day. She got a bum rap in a lot of the King Arthur myths. The Mists of Avalon put her in a whole new light. It is fairly accurate historically and a really good read besides. I call my daughter Katy (the spelling of the nickname comes from the Blues Brother's "She Caught the Katy." Talk about a strange spin on a good Pagan name, LOL! I usually call her Katymo because I did it just for laughs one day, and it stuck.

Dennis of Dionysus Greek
Dionysus, also commonly known by his Roman name Bacchus, appears to be a god who has two distinct origins. On the one hand, Dionysus was the god of wine, agriculture, and fertility of nature, who is also the patron god of the Greek stage. On the other hand, Dionysus also represents the outstanding features of mystery religions, such as those practiced at Eleusis: ecstasy, personal delivery from the daily world through physical or spiritual intoxication, and initiation into secret rites. Scholars have long suspected that the god known as Dionysus is in fact a fusion of a local Greek nature god, and another more potent god imported rather late in Greek pre-history from Phrygia (the central area of modern day Turkey) or Thrace.

I've seen "Fair one," "God has answered," and "God is Gracious." Mostly these operate under the assumption that it is derived from Jennifer, which is derived from Guinevere

Lyndsay: Derived from Lindsay or Lindsey
From the Linden island, a pool of water, or a place of Linden trees (I'm liking this *smile*)

First name Lori..derived from Lawrence meaning victorious. Middle name Lee. Linked together my first and middle names are Lorelei in german. The Lorelei was a siren on the Rhine river that wooed sailors with her song until they crashed on the rocks of the cliffs below. Not unlike the merewives I expect.

Aside from the technical meaning/origin of my name, my name signifies nothing. I was merely named what I am because it was a "good name"--it "sounded nice". Plus, my dad's name was "Phillip", so he had to tack his stamp on me. Anyway: I go by David, but my full name's Phillip David Williams. So:

Phillip: "Lover of Horses"

David: "Beloved"

Williams: "Protector"

I hate horses, I don't consider myself beloved, and I'm not protecting anything. Bah, some name.

Yeah, that's why I just put on 'Phil' because 'phil' just means love... I don't have any beef with love.

But I just hate all those 'lover of horses' jokes....

Ha! Yes.

I suppose I could elaborate on my name a bit more. Back during high school when I played football they called me "Big Dave". Of course, I was a lineman. Now, I could get away with being a wide receiver, heh.

Tesseract, the name of the daughter I'll probably never have, means, "My parents are geeks." My real son's name, Alex, means "My parents couldn't agree on a boy's name so they named me after a grandparent."

I think we should have a "milkname" system. We give our kids a name to use until they're more or less adult (15? 18?) then they get to choose their own adult name. That's more or less what I did, but I never wanted to go through the hassle of a legal name change, so instead I have to put up with the routine hassle of people asking me how I got my nickname. Choosing your own name would actually invest it with some meaning, at the cost of saddling middle-aged businessmen with the Butthead they chose to call themselves at 15.

You know, I kinda agree...I forget which book I read that in (might have been Dune...maybe...I tend to get things mixed up in the morning, so I could be wrong), but I've been thinking that would be a good idea.

My best friend's name is Lorelei, and whenever I quote a poem to her called, "The Lorelei" by Heinrich Heine, she gets mad at me. I memorized it on purpose so I could annoy her at will, hehe. That's what best friends are for! *grin*

There she stood on yonder height
A maiden wondrous fair
Her golden beauty sparkled
She combed her golden hair
With comb of gold she combed it
And sang most plaintively
A song of wondrous beauty
A potent melody

You should Napster her a recording of "Life in Lorelei", by Love and Rockets. It's actually about Lower L.A., but it should annoy her at least as much as "Come On Eileen" did one of my Ex-Girlfriends...
